Who was the first black Quarterback to win the Super Bowl? Revisiting the Redskins vs. Broncos Super Bowl XXII

Washington Redskins v Green Bay Packers
Senior Vice President of Player Personnel Doug Williams of the Washington Redskins at Lambeau Field on December 08, 2019 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Doug Williams is the first black quarterback to win the Super Bowl. He achieved this monumental feat in Super Bowl XXII. Williams did this while playing for the Washington Redskins, leading them to a victory over the Denver Broncos. He had a game to remember and was named the MVP at the end of the action.

Williams and the Redskins made history that day. In honor of Sunday's all-black QB matchup, we will be revisiting the iconic Super Bowl XXII.

Super Bowl XXII was played at Jack Murphy Stadium on January 31, 1998. It saw the champions of the NFC Conference, the Washington Redskins, face off against the champions of the AFC, the Denver Broncos. The game was played at the end of the 1987 NFL season.

The game was a blowout, as the Redskins triumphed over the Broncos 42-10. The highlight of the game was no doubt the quarterback play of Redskins shot caller Doug Williams.

The Redskins quarterback completed 18 of 29 passes for a then Super Bowl record of 340 yards and four touchdowns, with one interception. The Redskins completed a comeback in this game, as they were losing by 10 points in the first quarter.

This win marked the first time a black quarterback won a ring as a starter, and it certainly hasn't been the last.

The Quarterback Matchup in Super Bowl LVII

Fast forward 25 years and the NFL is about to have its first Super Bowl in history where both starting QBs are black. The game will feature Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Furthermore, this matchup is in no way a fluke, as both QBs have been the best in the league for the entirety of the 2022 NFL regular season.

First off is Jalen Hurts, a top-notch dual-threat QB who has been the glue to the Philadelphia Eagles' juggernaut of a winning machine. Hurts has totalled over 20 throwing touchdowns and well over 10 rushing touchdowns.

He has led a team filled with absolute studs like Jason Kelce, AJ Brown, and DeVonta Smith to the Big Game, and they aren't finished yet.

On the other hand is Patrick Mahomes, arguably the best quarterback of his generation. Mahomes has achieved basically everything there is to achieve in the NFL, and he's still far from 30.

Mahomes had arguably the best year of his career this season, leading the league in touchdown passes, yards passed, and QBR. He is the shoo-in to win the 2022 NFL MVP Award, which will be richly deserved.

The 27-year-old has had some help from Travis Kelce, Isaiah Pacheco, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and other stellar Chiefs. A win in Sunday's game will further cement his baby GOAT case, while a loss would put Hurts on a higher pedestal. May the best elite quarterback win!
