Born on 26th December 1989, Dominick Reyes is an undefeated American mixed martial artist competing in the light heavyweight division of the UFC. He is currently ranking #4 in the light heavyweight division in UFC rankings. He also happens to be a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Born in California, United States, Reyes has always has a wrestling background and as a young boy, he wanted to make a career in NFL. When his NFL aspirations fell through, he came back to California and started training in MMA at his brother's MMA gym, Combat Cage Academy. Apart from being a professional mixed martial artist, Reyes also works as an IT technical support staff at a high school.
Reyes had a professional record of 6-0 prior to joining the UFC. His most memorable pre-UFC bout was against Jordan Powell. The fight spread like wild fire on the internet because his opponent Powell was showboating inside the cage and got knocked out with a devastating kick from Reyes.
Nicknamed âThe Devastatorâ because of his nasty kicks, Reyes made his UFC debut on June 25, 2017 against Joachim Christensen at UFC Fight Night 112 and he won the fight in an emphatic fashion, finishing Christensen via TKO in the first minute of the opening round. He took home the performance of the night bonus on his debut.
In his second UFC bout, Reyes squared off against Jeremy Kimball at UFC 218 on 2nd December 2017 and picked up another victory by forcing Kimball to submit in the first round itself.
In what was his third win on the trot, Reyes beat Jared Cannonier via TKO in the first round at UFC Fight Night 129 on 19th May 2018. He followed it up with back to back decision wins against Ovince Saint Preux and Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 229 and UFC on ESPN+ 5 respectively.
Reyes is set to welcome âThe All Americanâ Chris Weidman to the light heavyweight division when the pair meet at UFC on ESPN 6 on 18th October 2019. The winner of this bout is expected to challenge the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones for the title in the near future.
Weidman made his light heavyweight debut against 'The Devastator' Dominick Reyes on 18th October 2019 at the main event of UFC on ESPN 6 at Boston, Massachusetts.
As soon as the bell rang to signal the start of the first round, Weidman distanced himself from Reyes immediately and took a kick to the body. Weidman shot for a takedown but failed to keep Reyes grounded. Weidman still had the body lock on Reyes, which the latter calmly defended and got out of with ease.
Weidman and Reyes were back on their feet, and in striking distance when a straight left by Reyes cracked Weidman on the chin. As Weidman fell to the ground, Reyes laid some nasty ground and pound on the former champion, knocking the lights out of him as Herb Dean had to step in and stop the contest at one minute and forty three seconds of the first round.
