Mike Glennon has signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars to back up starting quarterback Gardner Minshew.

Prior to the move, the Jaguars were lacking experience at the game's most important position.

The other options behind second-year pro Minshew are Josh Dobbs, who is yet to start an NFL game, and this year's sixth-round draft pick Jake Luton.

"Mike is entering his eighth season in the NFL and will bring vital experience into our quarterback room and make us a better football team," head coach Doug Marrone said after the move was announced on Friday.

"We want to be as strong as possible at every position. We expect Mike to come in and work hard, compete every day and help our team win."

Free agent Cam Newton has been among the veteran QBs linked with Jacksonville but the arrival of Glennon suggests Minshew remains safe as the starter.

Glennon, 30, started his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who drafted him in 2013, and he has since represented the Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders.

His last start came for the Bears in the 2017 season, when he played four games after signing a lucrative three-year, $45million contract, only to be promptly benched in favour of Mitchell Trubisky.

Glennon appeared in two games for the Raiders last season as backup to Derek Carr.

The Jaguars traded away Nick Foles, who will compete with Trubisky for the Bears starting job in 2020, earlier in the offseason.
