Gord Dwyer, the NHL referee, was born in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. Growing up, he was passionate about ice hockey and started playing the sport in the Sackville Flyers Minor Hockey program. Dwyer played junior hockey with the Sackville Blazers in Junior B and then a bit in Junior A with the Halifax Oland Exports. Surprisingly, he decided to focus on officiating instead of playing ice hockey.

He started officiating when he was just 14 alongside playing minor hockey. He worked at all levels of hockey in his hometown Sackville in the Minor Hockey System. Dwyer moved to the elite level, officiating junior and University games. After a few years, he transitioned to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as a linesman while working at the lower levels. In the summer of 2003, his momentum arrived when he took the role of full time NHL referee.

In his second season in the CHL, his skills caught the attention of the National Hockey League officiate recruiting committee, offering him to officiate the minor league.

At the age of 29, in the summer of 2006, Dwyer's dream came true, earning a full-time NHL referee status. He officiated his first game in the NHL on November 19, 2005, in Sackville, NS between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Edmonton Oilers. Since then, Dwyer has achieved many milestones in his career.

He officiated his 1000th NHL game on March 7, 2020, a testament to his skills and dedication in the league. Throughout his career, Dwyer has officiated 1,199 regular season games and 113 playoff games. He participated in three major Stanley Cup Final matches, making his significant contribution to the sport.

His first playoff game happened on April 16, 2014, between the Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning. Apart from these, Dwyer participated in the All-Star Game on February 5, 2022, in Las Vegas.Dwyer's journey from minor leagues to officiating in major matches like Stanley Cups and the All-Star is the result of the skills and experience he gained throughout the years.
