Fernando Valenzuela was a pitcher from Etchohuaquila, Sonora, Mexico. Valenzuela made his MLB debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 15, 1980, and was known as El Toro throughout his baseball career. In 1981, he was named the NL Rookie of the Year, the NL Cy Young Award, and led the Dodgers to the World Series championship. Valenzuela played in the All-Star Game six times from 1981 to 1986, won the Gold Glove in 1986, and two Silver Slugger Awards (1981, 1983).

Before ending his career in 1997, Valenzuela had played for teams like the Angels, Orioles, Phillies, Padres, and Cardinals. His No. 34 jersey was retired by the Dodgers, and he was inducted into the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. Valenzuela was also recognized with inductions into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame in 2003, the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013, and the Baseball Reliquary's Shrine of the Eternals in 2006. In 2019, his No. 34 was retired throughout the Mexican Baseball League.
