He was regarded as Japan's top pitcher in Nippon Professional Baseball before moving on to Major League Baseball. Darvish was a member of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in the Nippon Professional Baseball.

During his senior year, Darvish attracted national recognition when he pitched a no-hitter against Kumamoto Technical High School in the first round of the 76th National High School Baseball Invitation Tournament.
