#1 J.R. Smith
J.R. Smith is not a superstar that will completely transform the Rockets, although the 33-year-old is a reliable veteran who knows what it takes to win. Despite not always starting, Smith averaged 8.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game last season. The player also has the advantage of being available for trade, as the Cavaliers have told him that he can leave.
The only issue for the Rockets is the player's contract situation. Smith is owed $14,720,000 for the 18/19 season, with a further $3,870,000 guaranteed for 19/20, although if the 33-year-old can agree to a buyout with the Cavs, the deal is something the team should pursue. The Rockets collapse whenever James Harden or Chris Paul sit, and J.R. Smith could add both leadership and relief from the bench.
