Derrick Rose to return back to Cleveland Cavaliers squad

What's the story?

Derrick Rose after taking a self-imposed exile has made a decision and wants to return back to the Cleveland Cavaliers squad.

In case you didn't know...

Rose rolled his ankle as he landed awkwardly on Oct 20th and left the Cavaliers side on Wednesday, Nov. 25th.

The heart of the matter...

With the healing of the ankle injury taking longer than expected, Rose decided to take some time off the court and contemplate whether he wanted to continue his career as a basketball player as he has continued to suffer from multiple injuries since 2011, which has made him perform much less than his caliber. Internally it was expected that Rose would retire, but that no longer seems to be the case.

The 29-year-old after taking time away from the Cleveland Cavaliers seems to have come to a decision that he would like to return back to into action.

According to The Athletic's Jason Lloyd, the 2009 MVP as stated before has stayed in contact with the Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman and has shown desire to return back as soon as he is ready.

Rose is averaging 14.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists on 47.0 percent shooting for the seven starts he has made for the Cavaliers. But, with Dwayne Wade taking command of the second unit and with Isiah Thomas's return almost set, what role will the All-Star have in this new Cleveland Cavaliers side?

What's next?

Cleveland is expected to make a formal announcement confirming Rose's status on Sunday.

Author's take

It is good to hear that Rose has decided to fight against the injuries and to continue his career as an NBA player. Even though the injuries have reduced his MVP caliber talent and he is no longer the player that he once was, there is still some gas left in his tank and he can still be a valuable role player on any team.
