Standing at 7’2” with an overpowering stature, Indian- born Satnam Singh Bhamara made history in 2015 by becoming the first Indian to be drafted in the NBA by the Dallas Mavericks. Netflix has now has acquired exclusive streaming rights to the feature-length documentary made on the basketball player - “One in a Billion.”
The feature which is set for release on December 6 worldwide on Netflix, shows the prodigal journey of the first Indian-born basketball player ever to be drafted into the NBA. The documentary will feature NBA commissioner Adam Silver, Dallas Mavericks owner and billionaire Mark Cuban, Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé, and Troy Justice, the NBA’s senior director of international basketball operations.
The movie begins with the backdrop of the 20-year old’s home of Ballo Ke, and climaxes when they show a vivid night at Ney York City as he attempts to make history in the 2015 NBA draft. The film is directed by Roman Gackowski and produced by Michael D. Ratner, President and CEO of OBB Pictures. OBB and Ratner are repped by UTA and 3 Arts Entertainment. The film is a production of OBB in partnership with Media Weaver and RGTV.
OBB Pictures is a renowned name when it comes to producing biopics and documentaries. One in a Billion on Satnam is their recent addition. OBB has earlier released some brilliant documentaries some of which are, ESPN’s “The Clubhouse” featuring Malcolm Jenkins and ESPN’s “30 for 30 Shorts” film.
Earlier this year, OBB also inked partnerships with Mandalay Sports Media and Authentic Brands Group, which owns entertainment brands including Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, Elvis Presley and Shaquille O’Neal.
Satnam got his first major break when scouts from IMG Academy, a private athletic training facility in the States, travelled to India in 2010 to recruit potential players. He was their clear choice as they took him to Florida to start training for the game.
He was then selected by the Dallas Mavericks as the team’s 52nd overall pick in 2015 and currently plays as a centre for the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League.
The Punjabi lad has already set his future goals. Loyal to his own roots, Satnam dreams of opening a training academy back in India for other children who aspire to play basketball one day. Commenting on the sport’s scenario in India Bhamara said, “Children born here in the U.S. are so lucky. Most people in India can’t even come here to visit. I hope I can help other children play basketball one day too”.
