Before building a family with NBA star Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union was married to another pro athlete. She was with former NFL running back Chris Howard for five years before the two split up in 2006.
Gabrielle Union recently opened up on her marital life before being with Wade. While on the "Armchair Expert" podcast with Dax Shepard, she revealed some shocking details. Most notably, that their relationship was far from closed.
When the topic of cheating was brought up, Union dove into her time with Chris Howard. It was there that she revealed that she was seeing other people while still being married.
"In our first marriage, neither one of us felt that the marriage should get in the way of our dating."
Later on, Gabrielle Union spoke about how she felt entitled to cheat on her marriage to Chris Howard:
“I was paying all the bills, I was working my ass off and I felt like that’s what comes [with it],”
It's also worth noting that Union accussed Howard of being with other people as well.
Gabrielle Union admits that relationship with Chris Howard was a bad one
Looking back on it now, Union is clearly regretful of her first marriage. Thankfully, she has learned from her past mistakes. Now with Miami Heat icon Dwyane Wade, the two have a loving marriage and a happy family. To this day, the two still make grand gestures to show how much they care about the other.
Later on in the podcast, Gabrielle Union discussed why she was with the NFL running back. Part of it stemmed from her wanting validation of having high-profile people wanting to be with her:
“Having certain kinds of guys like me and want me … made me feel like I was worthy and good and valuable and deserving.”
In hindsight, this was a mistake. All it gave her was a five-year marriage to someone she did not belong to. Union also admitted that she and Howard should have never done anything more than date:
“Not one thing in common, no morals, no values, no scruples.”
Thankfully for Union, she does not have to worry about being in a toxic relationship anymore. She and Dwyane Wade have had their bumps in the road, but they've managed to overcome them.
Wade and Union have been married since 2014 and welcomed their first child into the world in 2018.
