Fantasy Basketball 2017/18: 10 Players to draft in Round 3

2017 NBA Finals - Game One
Two conference champions - Draymond Green and Kevin Love should be your primary targets in round 3

Third Round is where things start getting interesting you have selected your superstars now it is time to fill up your team with the supporting players.

Players who will make for the areas where your superstars might fall short. They may not be best in all parts of their game but are on top of things in which they are good.

#1 Kemba Walker/PG/Charlotte Hornets:

Milwaukee Bucks v Charlotte Hornets
Kemba Walker

The 2017 NBA all-star enters this season after scoring a career high in points last year with 23.2 points per game while also averaging 5.5 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.

He had the 4th highest 3ppg conversion rate last season making him a very stable asset in this golden age of point guards. With him being the team's superstar everybody will be eager to provide him with the goods to prosper.

#2 CJ McCollum/SG/Portland Trail Blazers:

Taco Bell Skills Challenge 2016
CJ McCollum

McCollum makes up the other half of Portland's 'Splash Brothers'. Coming into the 5th year of his NBA career he averaged a career high in points(23.0 per game) and rebounds(3.6 per game) while also dishing out 3.6 dimes per game. He also led the league in FT% with a mind-blowing .912.

While McCollum improved his scoring, he failed to make significant strides elsewhere, a trend that has us thinking his ceiling is only as high as his scoring can take him.

He works seamlessly with Damian Lillard, and the offense will be designed to run through both guards once again.

#3 Gordan Hayward/F-G/Boston Celtics:

Boston Celtics Introduce Kyrie Irving
Gordon Hayward

It took a lot of drama and time from Hayward before he announced his new team in the NBA offseason. Eastern Conference top seed Celtics were his chosen team. He will get to work with his former college basketball head coach Brad Stevens and 2016 NBA champion Kyrie Irving.

He comes into this season with a career-high in points (21.9 per game) and rebounds (5.6 per game), while providing his teammates with 3.5 assists per game. Production-wise, don't expect too much of a drop-off this season, though playing alongside a high-usage point guard in Irving could take the ball out of Hayward's hands a bit more often.

He should be able to more than supplement any decline in PPG in a rise in both rebounds and assists. You're looking at a player entering the prime of his career with as much help as ever, a Top-20 finish is a possibility.

#4 Draymond Green/F/Golden State Warriors:

2017 NBA Finals - Game Five
Draymond Green

Two-time NBA champion and 2017 NBA defensive player of the year Draymond Green as expected had a 'down' year last season due to KD's entry into GSW.

He still averaged 10.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. This shows that he continued to be the type of well-rounded contributor who should be taken off the board early due to the ease of constructing a fantasy roster around him.

He will make up for your 1st and 2nd round acquisition's weakness in any department. Take Green and feel good about your ability to compete across the board.

#5 Myles Turner/F-C/Indiana Pacers:

Dallas Mavericks v Indiana Pacers
Myles Turner

Coming into the third year of his NBA career, Myles Turner had a career-high in all departments averaging 14.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.1 blocks per game.

The Pacers lost both their top two scorers Paul George & Jeff Teague in the offseason leaving Turner with a heavy workload this coming season.

This means that a certain increase in usage will lead to the makings of a breakout campaign for Turner. Turner's rebounding rate left plenty to be desired for a second consecutive season, but given his shooting touch and defensive numbers, the fantasy value is strong, even if he doesn't grow into a nightly double-double threat.

#6 Paul Millsap/F/Denver Nuggets:

Atlanta Hawks Media Day
Paul Millsap

The 4-time NBA all-star decided to change teams and signed with the Denver Nuggets this offseason. He will pair up with the versatile forward/center Nikola Jokic and also enters a more efficient, faster-paced offense and avoids playing with a lane-clogging center in Howard.

Coming off a career-high season in points (18.1 per game) & assists (3.7 per game) but his rebounding and blocks declined. He should be able to bounce back in Denver & there is significant upside here, as this frontcourt has the potential to be one of the toughest to defend.

#7 Marc Gasol/C/Memphis Grizzlies:

Portland Trail Blazers v Memphis Grizzlies - Game Two
Marc Gasol

Three-time NBA all-star and 2013 NBA defensive player of the year comes into the season after having a career high in points(19.5 per game) and assists(4.6 per game) while also averaging 6.3 rebounds per game.

He is among the elite centers in the NBA and this year too he would like to maintain that. With only Mike Conley matching him in usage rate he could play an even larger role this season. Not to mention his newly found 3-point stroke that could elevate his return value in fantasy.

#8 Kevin Love/F/Cleveland Cavaliers:

Cleveland Cavaliers v Boston Celtics - Game Three
Kevin Love

2016 NBA champion and 4 time NBA all-star Kevin Love had an injury-marred but solid 16-17 season. He had a 3 point increase in PPG from 16.0 (in 15-16) to 19.0 (in 16-17) and a 1.2 increase in RPG from 9.9 (in 15-16) to 11.1(in 16-17).

Since his arrival in Cleveland, his production has decreased thanks to 2 superstar-caliber players in LeBron James and Irving, but with the latter gone and Isiah Thomas injured for an unknown amount of time, Kevin might just be the wingman LeBron needs.

When you consider that Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins and Russell Westbrook were the only 20-point, 10-rebound players in basketball last season, Love comes with a nice statistical ceiling due to his comfort in Cleveland.

#9 Bradley Beal/SG/Washington Wizards:

Phoenix Suns v Washington Wizards
Bradley Beal (L)

The Wizards shooting guard averaged a career high in points (23.1 per game) a near four-point increase from 17.4 PPG (in 15-16) and rebounds (3.1 per game) while dropping dimes at 3.5 per game.

The rebound and assist numbers are never going to be elite, but if he can average 7.5 rebounds-plus-assists, we are looking at borderline third-round upside.

While Beal carries some durability concerns, he played in 77 games last season and at 24 years of age, the best is yet to come from the Wizards sharpshooter as he and John Wall continue their assault on opposing backcourts.

#10 Kyle Lowry/PG/Toronto Raptors:

Boston Celtics v Toronto Raptors
Kyle Lowry

The 3-time NBA all-star comes into his 13th NBA season after averaging a career high in points (22.4 per game) and rebounds (4.8 per game) while also dishing out 7 dimes per game.

He is a great player but turns 32 in March and suffered a substantial injury that cost him more than a quarter of last season. Having said that, his efficiency has spiked in consecutive seasons and given that he was rewarded with a nine-figure contract this summer, he should come out strong to prove he's worth every penny.

Hence pay for a repeat performance of a strong 2016-17 and hope that the massive nine-figure contract is the first sign of even greater opportunity.
