Al Horford is happy with his decision to leave the Boston Celtics
Heading into the summer, few expected Al Horford to depart the Boston Celtics. The veteran had established himself as one of the Celtics' most important players over the past three seasons, and the organization remained keen to sign him to a new deal.
However, Horford opted out of the final year of his deal and completed a surprise move to the Philadelphia 76ers. The move puts the Sixers in a strong position to contend for a title, and Horford told the Boston Herald that competing for a title played a huge role in his decision to leave Boston:
I want to be in a position that I have a really good opportunity to win now. You know, my window is now. That’s how I feel. I had to make a head-on decision, and it came down to the opportunity for me to compete for a championship, but also to maximize financially.
Horford turned 33 earlier this year, although the 18-19 season was one of the best of his career. The Dominican averaged 13.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game - and he will now spend the next four seasons chasing a title with the Sixers.
