Charles Barkley took a shot at his former team, Philadelphia 76ers, in a hilarious segment with an old adversary on "Inside the NBA." Barkley was surprised by Scott Hastings in Tuesday's episode of the beloved studio show on TNT.
The two spoke about Hastings throwing a punch at Barkley during a brawl between the Sixers and the Detroit Pistons in 1990. Barkley got into a fight with Bill Laimbeerm and it spilled onto the floor. Hastings, who was on the bench, took a shot at Barkley while he was down.
Barkley, Hastings and all players who were involved in the fight received a fine from the NBA. While "Sir Charles" forgot how much the incident cost him, Hastings never forgot his — $14,780. He also asked Barkley if the Sixers paid for his troubles.
"I don't remember how much I got fined," Barkley said. "If you know the Sixers, they're cheap, Scott. Trust me."
Charles Barkley earned around $9 million from the Philadelphia 76ers during his career. It may not be as big as the current salaries in the league, but it was a lot of money back then. Barkley did receive better deals with the Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets.
The Hall of Famer also had no problem earning much more from his career as an analyst. He recently signed a 10-year extension with TNT worth $100 million, as per the New York Post.
Charles Barkley's Philadelphia 76ers career
Charles Barkley was the fifth overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1984 draft. Barkley joined the star-studded cast of Julius Erving, Moses Malone and Maurice Cheeks, who won an NBA championship just a year before.
The Auburn product didn't have a huge impact with the Sixers till his second season. He primarily came off the bench as a rookie but had all the potential to be a superstar. He had his breakout season in 1987 when he was named an All-Star for the first time.
Barkley spent eight seasons in Philadelphia, leading them to the playoffs six times. He was also named an All-Star six times as a Sixer. However, he demanded a trade after the team failed to make the playoffs in 1992. He was traded to the Phoenix Suns that summer and won the 1993 MVP award while also making his lone NBA Finals appearance.
In 2001, the Sixers honored Barkley by retiring his No. 34 jersey. The team also unveiled a statue of the "Round Mound of Rebound" outside their practice facility in Camden, New Jersey.
