Defending Jontay Porter with Miles Bridges comparisons draws NBA writer flak

After being investigated by the NBA for a gambling scandal, Jontay Porter was sentenced to a lifetime ban from the league. One writer tried to come to his defense but was met with a negative reaction from fans.

In the story written about Porter, the writer claims that he shouldn't be banned for life. The basis of this stance stems from other situations that have happened in the leauge, mainly, players who faced domestic abuse charges but were only suspended for a brief period. One of the examples used in the story was Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges.

As the story did rounds on social media, fans gave their thoughts on the situation. They feel Jontay Porter should still be banned from the league along with players charged with abuse.

"I agree. It’s illegal no doubt he deserves a suspension and fine, but get your priorities straight. Domestic violence, sexual predation etc deserve equal or harsher disciplinary action," wrote X user @cadchuige.
"Yeah I disagree, he definitely does. But so does Miles Bridges and whoever else has a scandal like that," X user @yanksandceltics wrote.
"Adam Silver’s ONLY job is to protect the integrity of the game, the LAW deals with domestic violence, not Adam Silver," X user @LakerHateMuse wrote.

Porter played 37 games in his NBA career. Before playing for the Toronto Raptors this season, he appeared in 11 games for the Memphis Grizzlies in 2021.


Adam Silver speaks on Jontay Porter lifetime ban

With the announcement of his lifetime ban, the NBA also revealed the findings of their investigation into Jontay Porter.

It was revealed that he went against league rules by giving out information to bettors. Moreover, he limited his play on purpose multiple times to allow bettors to make money.

One instance brought up in the press release happened in a game at the end of March. A bettor associated with Porter placed an $80,000 wager for him to underperform, and it ended up paying out winnings of over one million dollars.

Along with his actions on the court, Porter also had gambling dealings off the court. It was uncovered that he placed bets on NBA games from a friend's account during his time in the G-League.

Following such a harsh punishment, NBA commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement regarding the situation.

"There is nothing more important than protecting the intergrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter's blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment."

Porter joins the sizable list of players who have been issued a lifetime ban from the league. Jontay is the younger brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr.
