Franz Wagner and Germany faced off against host team France in the 2024 Paris Olympic basketball tournament. The duel between the European powerhouses had a terrific start, although Germany took a seven-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
Wagner led his national team in the first period, scoring seven points to take the first quarter 25-18. The Orlando Magic star has been the best player for his team in this tournament, and his intense start to the game seemingly previewed another dominant performance.
The second quarter was a different story, though, as France started playing more physically, taking the reigns of the game and limiting Germany to only eight points. Wagner didn't score in this quarter, as he only played 11:51 minutes in the first half.
The swingman added four rebounds and two assists, but his efforts weren't enough to break the tie, as both national teams finished the first half with 33 points on the scoreboard.

The third quarter was rough for Wagner, as he went scoreless in eight minutes of action. Germany couldn't find a way to surpass France, not even in Dennis Schroder's heroics.
In the fourth quarter, Wagner only scored three points after nailing a clutch 3-pointer to cut the lead to two points. He made a big mistake with 12 seconds left on the clock, stumbling and losing possession at a crucial moment. In the end, after a couple of fouls, France won 73-69 and advanced to the final after a tumultuous start to this tournament.
Wagner put on 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in 29:39 minutes of action. He shot 40.0% from the field and 33.3% from deep.
Franz Wagner once again fails to help his team in a crucial game
As great as he played in the prior games, becoming the best player on the German roster, Franz Wagner had an underwhelming performance against France. The swingman barely scored 10 points in the elimination game, reminiscing what happened during the 2024 NBA playoffs.
During the first round of last season's playoffs, Wagner had a solid start in the Cleveland Cavaliers series, scoring 18, 18 and 16 points. He had his best game when he scored 34 points in Game 4 of the series, followed by 14 and 26 in Game 5 and 6.
Wagner showed the worst version of his game in Game 7, only scoring six points against the Cavs. That performance was similar to today's outing, which left Germany out of the race for the gold medal when they were considered favorites to win this duel.
