The Paris Olympics Basketball had a strong start today. One of the most anticipated tournaments of the Paris Olympics is officially underway with some notable games on the books.

Team USA is yet to make its debut in the competition, but other contenders like Australia, Germany and Canada have already stepped on the court to start their quest for the gold medal. After the first four games of the first matchday of the preliminary round, it's time to check how every team fared, their position on the standings, and what's next for them.

The tournament's first game featured the bronze medalist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Australia beating Spain 92-80.

Five players from the Boomers scored in double digits, with Jock Landale leading the way with 20 points. Patty Mills added 19 points and Josh Giddey 17 points while Dyson Daniels and Jack McVeigh scored 13 points apiece. Santi Aldama, Sergio Llull and Willy Hernangomez scored 27, 17 and 14 points respectively, but it wasn't enough to beat the Aussies.

The second game of the day saw reigning FIBA World Cup champions Germany beat Japan by 20 points, 97-77, behind Franz Wagner's 22 points.

Host team France played the third game of the day, getting an easy 78-66 win over Brazil. NBA duo Victor Wembanyama and Nicolas Batum scored 19 points each to take their squad to the promised land.

The fourth and final game of the day saw Giannis Antetokounmpo's Greece clash against Canada, one of the favorites of the tournament.

Despite Antetokounmpo's heroics, Greece couldn't get past Canada, who got the 86-79 win. The Milwaukee Bucks star scored 34 points, but it wasn't enough to beat a well-rounded Canadian team led by RJ Barrett (23 points) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (21 points).

Australia leads this group after the first matchday. With its 92 points scored, they boast a +12 point difference. They scored more points than Canada in their first game, which gives them the edge over the North American team.

Germany made a strong statement against Japan in the first game of their group. The world champions registered the largest point difference in the four games played today, getting the top spot on the standings.

Paris Olympics Basketball 2024 Group C Day 1 schedule

South Sudan and Puerto Rico will kick off Group C of the Olympic tournament at 5 a.m. ET. Team USA will close out the first matchday of the preliminary round against Serbia at 11:15 a.m. ET.
