When Charles Barkley preached safe sex after Magic Johnson’s HIV reveal in his trademark blunt manner

Prior to the 1991-92 NBA season, Charles Barkley was one of many players in awe of the news regarding Magic Johnson. The LA Lakers legend was forced to retire after finding out he tested positive for HIV.

At the time, people did not know much about the disease. Thankfully, Johnson was able to overcome this horrific diagnosis through medicine and proper treatment.

Back in 1993, Charles Barkley did a tell-all interview with Playboy where he discussed a wide array of topics. Among the topics mentioned was Magic Johnson and his diagnosis. When asked what impact the news had, Barkley cited how many people around the league changed their sexual habits.

"Magic has helped so many people understand sexual activity. Anybody who has sex without using a condom is out of his mind," he said.

The diagnosis cost Johnson four years of his career, but he still managed to end his historic career on his terms. He returned to the Lakers during the 1995-96 season and appeared in 32 games.

Charles Barkley felt deeply sorry for Magic Johnson

Part of what made Magic Johnson such a transcendent figure in NBA history was his glowing personality. To this day, the LA Lakers legend is adored by so many in and around the league.

He was easy to gravitate towards, which meant the news of his diagnosis hit the league hard. Later in the aforementioned interview, Charles Barkley talked about how bad he felt for his fellow star.

"I feel bad about all the pressure Magic has been under. I think he should be playing."

While Charles Barkley still wanted Magic Johnson on the court, he did not hold a grudge against those who were against it. Part of why he was forced to retire is because many were scared of catching the virus from him through sweat or an open cut.

"They’re entitled to that opinion. It’s not fair for us to tell them they’re wrong. The medical opinion says there’s a small chance. Well, who are we to tell those guys they should take that small chance?"

Given that there was limited information at the time, it's valid that many were worried about playing against Johnson following the diagnosis. Luckily, things changed over time and allowed the Hall of Fame point guard to end his career on a lighter note.

It's worth noting that Barkley went on to lead his Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals shortly after the interview. Unfortunately, they were not able to overcome Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
