Markquis Nowell of the Kansas State Wildcats has declared for the 2023 NBA draft. He had a record-breaking performance in the NCAA Tournament, leading Kansas State to the Elite 8 before coming up short against Florida Atlantic 79-76.

Nowell has thanked Kansas State, the coaching staff, his teammates and all their fans for supporting him in the last two seasons. Nowell made it clear that it's his dream to play in the NBA and is looking forward to the next chapter of his life.

"To play in the NBA has been a dream of mine since I was 7 years old and I finally have the opportunity to turn a dream into a reality," Nowell wrote. "Continue to pray for me as I embark on this new journey and chapter of my life. And never forget, every man a Wildcat!"

Before Markquis Nowell became a star for Kansas State, he played the first three years of his collegiate career at Arkansas-Little Rock. Before that, he was a three-star recruit in high school, rated 247Sports as the ninth-best prospect in New Jersey.

Nowell played for three high schools. He went to St. Anthony High School in Jersey City for his freshman year. He was coached by Hall of Famer Bob Hurley Sr., but received little playing time.

The blitzing guard transferred to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn and played there for two years. He averaged 19.9 points and 8.1 assists per game as a junior, playing alongside future NBA players Justin and Julian Champagnie.

Nowell transferred again for his senior year, playing at The Patrick School in Hillside, New Jersey. Some notable alumni of The Patrick School include Kyrie Irving and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Will Markquis Nowell get drafted?

Markquis Nowell had an amazing NCAA Tournament, averaging 24.0 ppg and 14.0 apg. He set the record for the most assists (19) in a NCAA Tournament game against Michigan State in the Sweet 16, breaking the record set by Mark Wade of UNLV in 1987.

Despite his impressive March Madness showing, Nowell might go undrafted in a class headed by 7-foot-5 Victor Wembanyama. At just 5-8, Nowell would be one of the smallest prospects in this year's draft. Apart from his stature, he's 23 and could be one of the oldest talents in the class.

However, it wouldn't be surprising if he gets drafted in the second round. He could also still achieve his dream if goes undrafted by proving himself in the Summer League.

The three shortest players in the NBA today stand at 5-11 — Kennedy Chandler of the Memphis Grizzlies, McKinley Wright IV of the Dallas Mavericks and Jordan McLaughlin of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
