Ochai Agbaji: A Brief Biography




Early Life and High School Career


Ochai Agbaji was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. He grew up playing soccer and AAU basketball but left soccer in his sophomore year in high school to focus on basketball. He attended Oak Park High School in Kansas City and averaged 27.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game as a senior. He was considered a three-star recruit according to several scouting reports.



College Career


Ochai Agbaji played for the Kansas Jayhawks of the Big 12 Conference for all four seasons. He led the Jayhawks to the NCAA title and won the MVP award for the National Championship game in his final year. He was named the Big 12 Player of the Year in 2022 and included in First Team All-American and First Team Big 12. Agbaji is now one of the most sought-after prospects in the nation due to his performances in the NCAA tournament.



NCAA Tournament Performance


The Kansas Jayhawks won all six rounds in the NCAA tournament and earned the National Championship title for the fourth time in franchise history. Agbaji averaged 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks per game for the six games. He dropped 21 points while shooting 6-7 from three-point range against the Villanova Wildcats in the Final Four stage. Agabji scored just 12 poinst and one three-pointer in the final game but was named MVP for his defense and overall production in the tournament.

Ochai Agbaji has improved in every single season he has played in college. From averaging 8.5 points in his freshman year, he gradually kept improving to eventually average 18.8 points in his senior year. He started in all but six games in his college career. Agbaji’s assists and rebounding numbers kept fluctuating over the years but he ended his senior year with career-highs in most categories.

Ochai Agbaji’s career splits might be misleading because his freshman and sophomore numbers aren’t that impressive. He improved drastically over the years and although his career three-point shooting efficiency is 37.3%, he shot at 40.7% accuracy in his senior year. Agbaji doesn’t get to the foul line a lot but when he does, he converts roughly 70% of his attempts.

Ochai Agbaji is a terrific defender who can guard multiple positions and also drain threes at a high clip. He can be an ideal 3-and-D player in the NBA and is often compared to Jae Crowder and Malik Beasley.
