A mid-range attempt in the NBA is any two-point shot attempted outside the paint and within the arc and there are players, like DeMar DeRozan, who thrive from mid-range.
There also teams that rely their playing style on players that can excel from mid-range, such as Kevin Durant and Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns.
On the contrary, there are teams, like the Memphis Grizzlies and Boston Celtics, where their majority of field goal attempts comes from beyond the arc or inside the paint.
In this article, we will take a look and focus on teams that had the most mid-range field goal attempts last season.
5 NBA teams with the most midrange attempts per game in the 2022-23 season
#5 - LA Clippers
The LA Clippers' roster includes some of the best mid-range shooters in the league, like Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. In the same way, Russell Westbrook, an average three-point shooter, also takes a lot of shooting attempts from mid-range.
The three superstars share the majority of field-goal attempts for the Clippers, who averaged 13.1 field goal attempts from mid-range last season, which is 42.9 percent of their overall shooting.
#4 - Brooklyn Nets
Another NBA team that attempts a lot of mid-range field goals are the Brooklyn Nets. This doesn't come as a surprise given the presence of Ben Simmons, who doesn't shoot a three, Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson. Spencer Dinwiddie is another player that can shoot a lot from mid-range.
As a result, Brooklyn was fourth on the respective list with 13.6 mid-range field-goal attempts, which was almost half of their shooting distribution (48.9 percent).
#3 - Atlanta Hawks
With Trae Young, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Dejounte Murray on the roster, it makes sense for the Atlanta Hawks to be among the top teams in field goal attempts from mid-range.
All three of them have the ability to shoot from inside the arc especially in one-on-one situations and when they can't drive to the basket. Young and Bogdanovic are also elite from beyond the arc, with Atlanta having the third-highest mid-range field-goal attempts with 14.7 (45.7 percent of their overall shooting).
#2 - Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns and the Chicago Bulls should be considered the best two teams from mid-range in the NBA. The reason is the presence of players that prefer to shoot from inside the arc, like Devin Booker and Kevin Durant.
Booker and Durant are two of the top scorers in the league and great in one-on-one situations. Thus, their ability to overcome their opponent and hit a mid-range jump-shot is a cornerstone of their playing style.
The Suns ranked second in mid-range field-goal attempts in the NBA last season with 15.7 per game, good for 43.8 percent of their overall shooting.
#1 - Chicago Bulls
As mentioned above, the Chicago Bulls are one of the best teams from mid-range in the league. With DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine leading the way in mid-range field-goal attempts, it doesn't come as a surprise that the Bulls are on top of the NBA with 17.8 field-goal attempts from mid range. This was 44.5 percent of their overall shooting last season.
LaVine can shoot both from mid-range and beyond the arc, while DeRozan is considered one of the best NBA players from inside the arc and the majority of his shot attempts come from mid-range.
