Before Michael Jordan became a superstar talent, he made a name for himself in the Slam Dunk contest. His iconic performance in the event ended up giving him a nickname that would stick with him for the rest of his Hall of Fame career.

During his rookie season, Jordan inked a deal with Nike. A year later, the first "Air Jodans" were released. The Chicago Bulls superstar wore his shoes during his dunk contest wins in 1987 and 1988.

While competing, Michael Jordan pulled off incredible feats of athleticism. To this day, his dunk from the free-throw line is one of the most talked about moves in the history of the event.

As the Air Jordans were already out, Jordan was later dubbed "His Airness" for his incredible dunks and hangtime. Of all the nicknames he gained over the course of his career, this was the one that stuck the most.

What other nicknames did Michael Jordan receive during his career?

Outside of "His Airness," there were countless names that Jordan went by during his 15 years in the NBA. They include "Mike," "M.J.," "G.O.A.T," "Mr. June" and "Black Jesus."

"Black Jesus" was a name that stemmed from something Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird said about Jordan after a showdown in the postseason. During the 1986 playoffs, the two squared off in a three-game series.

The Celtics ended up sweeping the Chicago Bulls, but Michael Jordan made sure his presence was felt. In Game 2 of the series, he erupted for 63 points, five rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks. After the game, Bird said it was God disguised as M.J.

To this day, Jordan's 63 points is the most scored by a player in a single playoff game.

While there are countless names Jordan goes by, "His Airness" is among the most synonymous with the six-time champion. This is in large part because of his line of signature shoes and his masterful dunks.
