Dan Lanning is the head coach of the Oregon Ducks football team, a position he has held since December 2021. He was a linebacker for the William Jewell Cardinals from 2004-2007. Lanning hails from Missouri, and during his time at Georgia, he was a finalist twice for the Broyles Award, for being the nation's top assistant coach. Lanning was hired as Oregon's 35th head coach. He spent four seasons at the University of Georgia as a defensive coordinator and an outside linebacker coach. Lanning began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Pittsburgh in 2011, and he also worked in assistant coaching positions at Arizona State, Sam Houston State, Alabama, Memphis, and Georgia.

In his first season with Oregon, he led the Ducks to a 10-3 record, which was the third-best figure in Oregon's history. Lanning continued his form in 2023, the team again put together a 12-2 record and a win in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. Before committing to Oregon, Lanning served as Georgia's defensive coordinator and guided the team to the 2022 national championship. His defensive players were ranked among the top units in the nation each year. Lanning also coached Georgia to three Eastern Division Championships and appeared in 10 bowl games throughout his coaching career.

Dan Lanning’s parents are Don Lanning and Janis Lanning, according to CBS Sports. According to his Facebook profile, Don Lanning is retired. He has worked as a teacher at Richmond, MO R-XVI Public Schools, at the Kansas City, MO School District, and was also a Science Teacher at the North Kansas City School District. Don attended North Kansas City High School and further studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Dan Lanning's wife is Sauphia Lanning. According to People Magazine, they met in 2005 while working together at an Outback Steakhouse in Liberty, Missouri, and got married in 2009. She is a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2016 but successfully overcoming the disease in 2017. According to her LinkedIn profile, Sauphia has been working as a Marketing Coordinator at H&R Block since 2014.
