
The Oregon Ducks appointed Dan Lanning as their head coach in December 2021. Before taking up the head coach job at Oregon, Lanning played a major role in helping Georgia capture the national championship in 2022 as a defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach. Lanning also coached at Arizona State, Sam Houston State, Alabama, and Memphis. At Oregon, he won the SDCCU Holiday Bowl game in his first season and also won the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl game in 2024.
Lanning recently received the prestigious Stallings Award for humanitarianism. This award honors exceptional leadership, character, and accomplishment in college football and is given out at the Dallas Country Club. According to the University of Oregon Athletics and Sports Illustrated, Lanning is the first coach from Oregon to receive the Stallings Award.
Dan Lanning Coaching History
Lanning worked as the wide receivers coach, defensive backs coach, and special teams coordinator at Park Hill South High School for three seasons following the conclusion of his playing career at William Jewell. In 2011, Dan Lanning became a graduate assistant coach at Pittsburgh. He was a defensive backs coach at Sam Houston State after spending the 2012 season at Arizona State. In 2015, he relocated to Alabama to serve as the outside linebackers' defensive graduate assistant. He moved to Memphis in 2016 and coached inside linebackers there until 2017.
Georgia (DC/OLB, 2019-21)
In 2018, Lanning became the coach of Georgia's outside linebackers. In addition to coaching the outside linebackers, he was elevated to defensive coordinator. After finishing the regular season unbeaten in Lanning's final year, Georgia defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship Game and the Michigan Wolverines in the Orange Bowl semifinal to win the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship.
Oregon Ducks (2022-Present)
After Mario Cristobal left to take a position as head coach at the University of Miami, Lanning was appointed the 35th head coach of the University of Oregon on December 11, 2021.
