James Franklin is the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions football team representing Penn State University, which competes in the Big Ten conference. Franklin has been the coach of the Nittany Lions since 2014, having previously helmed the Vanderbilt Commodores football team from 2011 to 2013.

He had an overall record of 24 victories against 15 losses at Vanderbilt. Throughout his tenure at Penn State, Franklin has won 99 matches and lost 4111, for a total managerial record of 123–56. Before his career as a head coach, Franklin had multiple stints training quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends, and as defensive secondary, and offensive coordinator with different universities.

He began his coaching career in 1995 and trained wide receivers at the Kutztown University of Pennsylvania before switching to coaching defensive secondary at East Stroudsburg, the university where he graduated from.

In the next few years, he worked as a specific coach at Roskilde Kings, James Madison, Washington State, Idaho State, Maryland, Green Bay Packers, and Kansas State. In 2010, Franklin bagged his first senior coach job at Vanderbilt, and then in 2013 at Penn State University.
