Nittany Lion Penn State Mascot

The Nittany Lion is the mascot of the Pennsylvania State University athletic teams, which also include the Penn State Nittany Lions college football team. The Nittany Lions is a mountain lion resembling the ones that once used to live on Mount Nittany, which overlooks the Pennsylvania State University campus, as per PennState. The origin of the mascot started with the Princeton Tigers boasting about their Tiger mascot on April 20, 1904. Harrison "Joe" Mason, the third-baseman of Pennsylvania State University then declared the Nittany Lion as their own mascot. He then started his work to make the mascot a reality.

The first instance of a student wearing a lion suit arrived in October 1922. However, the suit was modified to look more like a mountain lion by 1939 and since then, the Nittany Lion has become “the symbol of Penn State’s best,” as per PennState. Notably, the identity of the mascot has always been kept a secret according to an agreement between the mascot and the Cheerleading and Mascot Program as per Daily Collegian. However, he has always been performed by a student from Pennsylvania State University. Nittany Lion officially became a Mascot Hall of Famer on June 16, 2019, in Whitting, Indiana, United States.
