Utah Football Stadium History and Construction Cost

Rice-Eccles Stadium, also known as Utah Football Stadium, boasts a remarkable history and a significant construction cost. Before its transformation, the previous stadium, Rice Stadium, was constructed in 1927. It showed signs of aging and could not meet the standards required for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

In 1996, the University of Utah's athletic director Chris Hill, unveiled plans to renovate Rice Stadium into a state-of-the-art facility with a goal of completing the overhaul within three years. However, a game-changing donation in 1997 altered the course of the project. Spencer Eccles, a Utah alumnus and chairman of First Security Corporation (now part of Wells Fargo), generously pledged $10 million to the project. In appreciation, the university decided to add George Eccles's name to the stadium alongside that of Robert L. Rice, who had funded its previous renovation in 1972.

Rice-Eccles Stadium construction commenced in June 1997 and completed on September 12, 1998, just in time for the 2002 Winter Olympics. The entire project cost $50 million, which, adjusted for inflation, amounts to approximately $89.8 million in 2022. FFKR Architects played a vital role in the architectural design. This transformation turned Rice-Eccles Stadium into the modern Utah Football Stadium we know today.
