During his high school football career, he amassed over 9,000 passing yards and 148 total touchdowns, making him the all-time passing leader in South Dakota high school football history. At the end of his high school career, he initially committed to the University of Washington. However, Kienholz decided to join Ohio State University in 2023.

Upon joining Ohio State, Kienholz was positioned as the third-string quarterback behind Kyle McCord and Devin Brown. His debut came during a game against Michigan State, where he completed two of three passes for 18 yards. His most significant opportunity arose in the 2023 Goodyear Cotton Bowl against Missouri, where he stepped in for the injured Brown and played 42 snaps, completing six of 17 passes for 86 yards. Throughout two seasons, Lincoln Kienholz has played in 5 games for the Ohio State Buckeyes, 3 in 2023 and 2 in 2024.
