He made a career breakthrough with IPL
He made a career breakthrough with IPL

The IPL 2019 is just around the corner and the teams will be looking to put their best foot forward for the 2-month long extravaganza. The fact that the World Cup is just months away may have taken some importance out of this edition of the Indian Premier League but there is still excitement in the air as to which will be the best team coming out of this IPL.

A lot of talent has been identified to the world in the past just through the IPL and this year will be no different as the stars around the world will come to play what is the most important and lucrative domestic T20 tournament in the entire globe.

The fact that IPL has not lost its sheen in spite of heading into its 12th edition is a testament to the fact that it has brought out new stars in every aspect of the game over the years.

One such is the death bowling, and over the past couple of years many bowlers have gone on to become better at the end of an inning.

We will look who can be the possible death bowlers from each side.

#8 Delhi Capitals- Chris Morris

Chris Morris
Chris Morris

Chris Morris is a great asset for any side, and Delhi Capitals with their new-look side will be hoping that the lanky all-rounder from the Rainbow Nation will deliver in the upcoming season of the IPL on a regular basis.

Chris Morris has been one of the standouts for the formerly known Delhi Daredevils and has the potential to win games on his own with both the bat and ball.

Chris has been influential so far for any team he has played in the IPL from 2013. He has so far played 52 matches with a batting strike rate of 166 to go with the 56 scalps he has taken at an impressive average of 25 in his IPL career.

He has done it before for the team in past bowling at the death, and Delhi will hope he will bring his experience to the fray.

Other Possible options: Kagiso Rabada

#7 Kings XI Punjab- Andrew Tye

Andrew Tye had an exceptional IPL season last year
Andrew Tye had an exceptional IPL season last year

Andrew Tye was the owner of the purple cap last season having claimed 24 wickets for the Kings XI Punjab but that was not enough to take his side to the playoffs.

He had seldom support from the others as well as the batsmen which was cited as the reason for their disappointing outing last season.

Tye's success in the last season was not surprising as he was a world-renowned T20 bowler and had been radar of quite a few teams before his debut in the IPL. The 32-year-old right arm fast bowler has been a great exponent of bowling at the death and will be a player to watch out even in the 2019 edition of the IPL.

In the 20 matches, he has played over the course two years for Gujarat Lions, and Kings XI Punjab, he has picked up 36 wickets including a 5 wicket haul.

Other possible options: Mohammad Shami and Sam Curran

#6 Rajasthan Royals- Jaydev Unadkat

Jaydev Unadkat
Jaydev Unadkat

Jaydev Unadkat has become one of the sought out death bowlers in the IPL particularly after an outstanding season that he had with the Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017 where he ended up taking 24 wickets in 12 games.

After a lacklustre outing last season, one in which he was bought for Rs 11.5 crores by the Rajasthan Royals, the franchise released him ahead of this season. But surprisingly he was picked again by the same franchise for a whopping 8.4 crores. This shows the confidence the team has on the left arm pacer from Gujarat.

Given his abilities to hit the deck hard and bowl consistently at the desired length, he might just be the perfect option to bowl at the death again for the Ajinkya Rahane led side.

Overall his stats are amazing but he has to get through the torrid time he had last time out of his mind and make a difference at the end for his team.

Other possible candidates: Jofra Archer and Oshane Thomas

#5 Kolkata Knight Riders- Andre Russell

Andre Russell

There is nothing that Andre Russell cannot do in the field particularly in a T20 game. He is one of the major reasons why the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise have been successful over the last couple of seasons.

Throughout his career in the IPL, he has been effective both with the bat and the ball. And given the conditions of Kolkata, there may be a chance that he has to spearhead the bowling attack as they have plenty of slow bowling options in their arsenal and pace battery is quite inexperienced at the IPL level.

He has bowled at the death before for the KKR side in the previous editions, but this time he might have to take the brunt of the responsibility. The fit-again Andre Russell is what required by the team right now and he might do wonders at the death if he gets the opportunity.

In his IPL career, he has so far taken 44 wickets from 50 games to go with 890 runs he has scored.

Other possible options: Sunil Narine and Lockie Ferguson

#4 Royal Challengers Bangalore- Tim Southee

Tim Southee
Tim Southee

Tim Southee will probably have to lead the Royal Challengers bowling attack along with Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Siraj. RCB side also has the Australian fast bowler Nathan Coulter Nile with them for this IPL.

While Coulter Nile may be a better-suited option than Tim Southee to bowl at the death, but he is so injury prone and is coming back from a lay off for such injury. Southee has done it in the past quite a few times while playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and also for his national team in the limited overs format.

But so many options to bowl at the death arguers well for the Virat Kohli led RCB side whose weakness over the past seasons has been the death bowling.

Though he hasn't set the IPL on fire taking only 27 wickets in 36 games, he is vastly experienced and a longer rope by the RCB side to him will yield them good rewards.

Other possible options: Umesh Yadav and Nathan Coulter Nile

#3 Sun Risers Hyderabad- Bhuvneshwar Kumar

SRH needs Bhuvi to come good
SRH needs Bhuvi to come good

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of those players who has emerged to be successful bowler both with the new ball and at the death with the old ball. He is one by-product of the IPL and the tournament has helped him to grow further as a bowler at all the levels across the formats.

Bhuvi may be rested for a few league games given the fact that the World Cup is around the corner and will commence just a few weeks after the IPL ends. So the franchises may have to sacrifice one or few of their top players for few games for them not to be injured.

Even though he may not available for the entire course of the tournament, he is still likely to be used by the SRH side at the death given his past success. He has taken 120 wickets in 102 games in the IPL so far.

Other possible options: Khaleel Ahmed and Siddharth Kaul

#2 Chennai Super Kings- Dwayne Bravo

Dwayne Bravo
Dwayne Bravo

The word death bowling and a T20 specialist has become synonymous with Dwayne Bravo. For every team he plays which is plenty around the globe, he is an impact player both with the bat and the ball particularly the latter.

One of the reasons for CSK's dominance in the IPL over the years has been their talismanic all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. Ever since his debut for CSK in 2011, he has been a vital member of the side.

Bravo has won the purple cap twice and his contributions with the bat have won CSK many games from the jaws of defeat as we saw in the last season.

Bravo may have retired from International cricket but he is still the most sought player in the T20 format and the yellow brigade are lucky to have him in their squad. In his IPL career, he has taken 136 wickets at an average of a little over 24 and has over 1300 runs in 122 matches that he has played.

Other possible options: Mohit Sharma and David Willey

#1 Mumbai Indians- Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah has come leaps and bounds so far in his international career across all the format and he can attribute the success to the IPL which made him a player he is today.

Mumbai Indians bought this youngster who was relatively an unknown commodity then and now the same player will lead the pace attack.

Just like Sun Risers Hyderabad have to be without Bhuvneshwar Kumar for some of the games, the Mumbai Indians will have bear the same with Jasprit Bumrah as India would need him to fit for the World Cup and where him picking up even a small injury might affect India's chances.

He, without any doubt, will most probably be the death bowler for the team whenever he plays. Jasprit Bumrah has so far claimed 63 wickets in 61 games and is an integral part of the Mumbai line up.

Other possible options: Lasith Malinga and Mitchell McLeneghan
