IPL 2020: The oldest and youngest players from each team

The Indian Premier League is slated to begin in less than three months and all eight teams are set. The best part about the biggest domestic T20 league is that it is an enormous platform for young and emerging players.

IPL provides a huge opportunity for these youngsters to come to the limelight and also learn from veterans from around the globe as the biggest superstars from all around the world also feature in the IPL.

IPL 2020 will be no different and witness a good mix of both young and established players. Having this variety helps in maintaining the balance in the league apart from making it interesting. It is eventually all about nerves when someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal faces seasoned bowlers like Pat Cummins.

The initial mindset about the T20s was that it is a youngster's game but players like Chris Gayle have adapted exceptionally well to the format. The management of each IPL team puts in a special effort to make their respective sides a good mix of both young and seasoned players.

In this article, we will take a look at the oldest and youngest player from each team.


#8 Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

Veteran speedster Dale Steyn was roped in by RCB for his base price of ₹2 crore ahead of IPL 2020. The legendary fast bowler used to be a regular feature inthe IPL. With 96 wickets in 92 IPL matches at an economy rate of 6.77, Steyn has had a glorious career in the league.

The aggressive bowler was a part of the RCB squad last year as well. However, after playing just two matches, a shoulder injury kept him out of action for the remainder of the season.

The intimidating Protean is currently playing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League and has clinched 5 wickets in 4 matches. Prior to that, he was playing for Cape Town Blitz in the Mzansi Super League 2019. He finished as the 3rd highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 15 wickets in just 8 matches.

Some of the other senior players in the RCB set up are AB de Villiers (35); Parthiv Patel (34); Aaron Finch (33); Moeen Ali, Christopher Morris, and Umesh Yadav (all 32).

Youngest Player - Devdutt Padikkal (19 years)

Devdutt Padikkal, aged just 19, is the youngest player in the RCB squad this season. The Kerala-born player is regarded as an extremely capable batsman and was bought back by the Bangalore-based franchise. The young southpaw is regarded for his performances in the Karnataka Premier League and Cooch Behar Trophy 2018 and will be eager to make his IPL debut this year.

The performances helped Padikkal win a place in the senior Karnataka team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Slowly, he has moved up the ladder by virtue of his skill. He smashed 609 runs in eleven matches in the 2019 Vijay Hazare Trophy and finished as the leading run-getter of the tournament.

A few of the other youngsters in RCB include Josh Philippe (22) and Washington Sundar (20).

#7 Mumbai Indians

Four-time IPL Champions Mumbai Indians have a good mix of both young and old players. The eldest in the squad is Sri Lanka's veteran speedster Lasith Malinga.

The flamboyant fast bowler is IPL's all-time highest wicket-taker with 170 scalps in 122 matches. The Mumbai-based franchise retained his services for ₹2 crore. He was the captain of Sri Lanka's 2014 T20 World Cup-winning side and brings in his wealth of experience to the MI side.

The Galle-born player has been a crucial part of MI since 2009. Even now, Malinga continues to have a dream run in the IPL. He is a bowler who has adapted well with his age. Even though the speeds at which he bowls are lower compared to those of his prime, Malinga's variations and yorkers make him one the most lethal bowlers of the time.

Some of the other seniors in the MI squad are Mitchell McClenaghan (33); Nathan Coulter-Nile, Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard (all 32).

Youngest Player - Rahul Chahar (20 years 158 days)

Rahul Chahar is technically MI's youngest player. All-rounder Prince Balwant Rai Singh is 20 years 249 days so Chahar is still younger than him.

Rahul is an extremely talented leg-spinner. The sport runs in his genes, as he is the cousin of recent pace sensation Deepak Chahar. The Bharaatpur-born player was extremely effective for MI last season. He went on to pick 13 wickets in 13 matches at an excellent economy rate of just 6.55.

Chahar also played a couple of matches with MS Dhoni and Steve Smith while he was with Rising Pune Supergiants for 2017 IPL.

Some of the other young players in the MI squad are Anmolpreet Singh, Ankul Roy, Sherfane Rutherford, Ishan Kishan, and Digvijay Deshmukh. All five of these players are 21 years old.

#6 Chennai Super Kings

When it comes to age, Chennai Super Kings has the oldest and most experienced players. The oldest of them all is Imran Tahir. The South African bowler is 40 years old. Proving that age is just a number, the spin wizard emerged as the highest wicket-taker of IPL 2019 with 26 scalps in 17 matches. Tahir also maintained a rather impressive economy rate of 6.69 last season.

He is most popular for his feisty celebrations after taking a wicket and is a huge character on the field. The googly is Tahir's weapon of choice and he is tough to read in subcontinent conditions.

Apart from Tahir, MS Dhoni and Shane Watson are 38 years old. Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh (39), Dwayne Bravo (36), Murali Vijay (35), Ambati Rayudu (34), and Suresh Raina (33) are all quite experienced. Nonetheless, all these players form the core of the team.

Youngest Player - Sam Curran (21 years)

All-rounder Sam Curran was roped in by CSK for a handsome sum of ₹ 5.5 crore for IPL 2020. Curran is just 21 years old but has match-winning abilities. The youngster plays good cameos down the order and is also a potent left-arm seamer. He scored a fifty for Punjab in the previous edition and also boasts of an excellent strike rate of 172.72.

The youngster clinched 10 wickets in 9 matches for KXIP last season. This included a hat-trick against Delhi Capitals. In the process, he became the youngest ever player to take an IPL hat-trick.

Apart from Curran, Ruturaj Gaikwad (22); R. Sai Kishore and Lungisani Ngidi (both 23) are some of the younger players in the team.

#5 Delhi Capitals

Oldest Player - Amit Mishra (37 years)

Amit Mishra has had a splendid IPL career so far. The attacking right-arm leg-break bowler has a total of 157 wickets in the IPL in 147 matches. Mishra has also maintained an impressive economy rate of 7.35. He has played in all the 12 IPL editions thus far.

The veteran spinner yielded good results for the Delhi-based franchise last year too as he picked up 11 wickets in 11 matches. Delhi Capitals retained Mishra for ₹4 crore ahead of IPL 2020.

Apart from Mishra, a few other senior players in DC are Ravichandran Ashwin (33) and Shikhar Dhawan (34).

Youngest Player - Sandeep Lamichhane (19 years)

The youngest player in the DC squad is Sandeep Lamichhane. The wrist-spinner from Nepal is just 19 years old. He impressed in his first two IPL seasons - picking up 13 wickets in 9 matches, at a strike-rate of 16.15. Lamichhane is a clever bower and has multiple variations that help him in picking up wickets regularly. He is currently playing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

Some of the other young players in Delhi Capitals are: Prithvi Shaw (20), Keemo Paul (21), and Rishabh Pant (22).

#4 Kings XI Punjab

Chris Gayle or 'Gaylestorm', as he is popularly known, is the oldest player in the KXIP squad. The Jamaican cricketer is 40 years old but is still one of the most feared batsmen in T20 cricket. He is the highest run-scorer for West Indies in ODIs and has multiple international records to his name.

In the 125 matches Gayle has played in the IPL, he has amassed 4484 runs at a blistering strike rate of 151.03 and a commendable average of 41.14.

Some of the other older players in the KXIP set up are Krishnappa Gowtham, Chris Jordan, and Glenn Maxwell (all 31).

Youngest Player - Mujeeb ur Rahman (18 years)

At 18 years of age, KXIP's Right-arm off-break bowler Mujeeb ur Rahman is their youngest player. Mujeeb has an innate ability to bamboozle batsmen with his spin variations, especially the carrom ball. The Afghani cricketer was retained by KXIP for ₹4 crore. Mujeeb has clinched 17 wickets in the 16 IPL matches he has played thus far. After a lackluster 2019 edition, the mystery spinner will be looking to bounce back in 2020.

Some of the other young players in the KXIP line-up include Ravi Bishnoi (19); Arshdeep Singh (20); Darshan Nalkande, Ishan Porel, and Prabhsimran Singh (all 21).

#3 Kolkata Knight Riders

The Shahrukh-Khan based franchise roped Pravin Tambe in for his base price of ₹40 lakh, thereby making him the oldest player ever to be sold at the IPL auctions. The leg-spinner has picked up 28 wickets in the 33 matches he has played in his IPL career. The chances of him being in the playing XI are slim but Tambe would try to make the most of any opportunity he gets.

KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik is also one of the oldest players in the squad. The Tiruchendur-born player has been KKR's captain since 2018 and is 34 years old.

Harry Gurney and Eoin Morgan (33); Andre Russell and Sunil Narine (31) are some of the other older players in the team. All the remaining players are below 30 years of age and thus KKR has quite a young squad overall.

Kamlesh Nagarkoti is the youngest player in the KKR squad. Rajasthan-born Kamlesh is an out and out speedster. The right-arm fast bowler was unfortunate to miss out on the entire 2019 season due to a back injury. KKR still retained him for ₹3.2 crore and he will be looking to justify his high price tag in the 2020 edition.

Shubman Gill, aged 20 years 123 days is the second youngest player. Other youngsters in the KKR squad include Tom Banton, Manimaran Siddharth, and Shivam Mavi (all 21) and Prasidh Krishna (23).

#2 Rajasthan Royals

The newly roped in Robin Uthappa is the oldest player in the Rajasthan Royals setup. 34-year-old Uthappa was bought by RR for ₹3 crore. Robbie boasts of an impressive IPL career, having played 177 matches in which he has scored 4411 at a strike rate of 130.5 and an average of 28.83.

Uthappa had a disappointing 2019 IPL and will be looking to get back amongst the runs in the forthcoming edition. The other old player in the RR squad is Andrew Tye, who is 33 years of age.

Youngest Player - Akash Singh (17 years)

Akash Singh is RR's youngest player this season. The youngster is only 17 years old. He made his Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy debut with Rajasthan in November last year. The left-arm speedster is also a part of the India under-19 cricket team.

He recently played an important role in the final as he clinched the important wicket of South Africa Under-19 skipper Bryce Parsons to help India win the Quadrangular Under-19 Series taking place in South Africa. He will be looking forward to learn a great deal from the seniors in his debut IPL season.

The other youngsters in the squad are Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag (both 18); Kartik Tyagi (19); Anuj Rawat and Mahipal Lomror (both 20).

#1 Sunrisers Hyderabad

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha is 35 years and 77 days old and is closely followed by Mohammad Nabi, who is 35 years and 8 days old.

Saha was retained by SunRisers Hyderabad for ₹1.2 crore. Known as 'Flying Saha' for his athleticism behind the stumps, the Shaktigarh-born player is also a handy batsman. He has six fifties and a century to his name in his IPL career. Overall, Saha has played 120 matches in which he has scored 1765 runs at a strike rate of 131.13.

Amongst some of the older players in the squad is dynamic opener David Warner (33).

Youngest Player - Abdul Samad (18 years)

Abdul Samad is the youngest player in SRH at 18 years of age. The Jammu & Kashmir-born player was roped in by the franchise for his base price of ₹20 lakh. The right-handed batsman is a talented player and made his T20 debut during the 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

He plays first class cricket for Jammu and Kashmir and is currently playing in the Ranji Trophy. The middle-order batsman smashed a six-laden 128 off 75 balls in their latest match against Jharkhand to help his side win by an innings and 27 runs.

Other young guns of the SRH squad include Abhishek Sharma and Priyam Garg (both 19), and Rashid Khan and Syed Khaleel Ahmed (both 21).
