Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani won the rights to the Mumbai-based franchise during an auction conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008 for $111.9 million, making it the most expensive IPL franchise at the time. In 2017, MI became the first IPL franchise to breach the $100 million mark in terms of brand value, as per The Economic Times.

Nita Ambani, the founder and chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, and his son, Aakash Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, are heavily involved in the day-to-day functioning of the franchise.
