Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the greatest Test cricketers produced by India. But where did it all begin for the cricketing maestro? The IPL threw him into the limelight as the off-spinner was picked by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the inaugural IPL auction for INR 12 lakhs. He made his debut in 2009.
However, Ashwin started creating an impact from IPL 2010 onwards which subsequently earned him a national call. The selectors picked him for the Test team as well as in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup squad.

Ravichandran Ashwin IPL Teams from 2009-24
Though Ravichandran Ashwin was bought in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, the Tamil Nadu cricketer debuted in 2009 and started getting regular game time only in 2010. He earned a place in the 15-member squad for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and made a decent contribution to India’s victorious campaign.
The off-spinner was also instrumental in CSK’s title defense in 2011. Ashwin repaid MS Dhoni’s faith as the then-CSK skipper made him open the bowling a few times, including the famous wicket of Chris Gayle in the opening over of the 2011 IPL final. He proved to be a vital cog in the Super Kings’ spin department in the years to follow before a suspension on the franchise saw Ashwin join the makeshift franchise of Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016. He picked up 10 wickets but missed the entire IPL season in 2017 due to injury.
The return of CSK in 2018 meant a homecoming for the Chennai-born, but the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) bagged him for a price of INR 7.6 crores and appointed him the skipper of the franchise. Ashwin made headlines as he ‘mankaded’ Jos Buttler, which divided the cricketing world.
Ahead of IPL 2020, he was traded to the Delhi Capitals where he spent two seasons and played a part in the franchise finishing as runners-up in 2020 under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. Ashwin found his groove with the Rajasthan Royals, picking 26 wickets across two seasons (2022 and 2023). He also played a few game-changing cameos with the bat in the 2023 edition.
