God of War Ragnarok is the ninth game in the God of War series, which has changed dramatically since the original God of War was released in 2005. The first game featured a somewhat straightforward hack 'n' slash adventure filled with environmental puzzles, grandiose set pieces, and boss encounters. There were no RPG components to be found. 17 years later, God of War Ragnarok has the same essential pillars as its forefather.

There's a lot of cutting and slicing, it's an incredible journey, and the set pieces and boss fights may be more epic than ever. However, some significant changes have occurred. There are new RPG aspects with the ability to explore the game world. But does this imply that God of War Ragnarok is an open-world game?

Disclaimer: This article will contain details revolving around God of War Ragnarok and will contain spoilers for the game. Readers are advised to proceed at their own discretion.

Is God of War Ragnarok open world?

God of War Ragnarok, like the previous game, is best described as a collection of "semi-open" sandboxes that generate an open experience without the use of a pin-laden real totally open globe. Instead of teleporting about on a table, Kratos will use Mystic doorways, which have the capacity to warp to different parts of each area (game world).

They're like old-school fast travel points, and you'll have a fair notion of how the game's flow will play out throughout the course of the game's 30+ hour runtime. Several of the larger zones, including the starting location where Kratos and Atreus live, have methods of transportation to go around in (like sled wolves, boats, or ferries).

It is primarily linear, although there is an exploring element that allows players to find side tasks and chests during their experience. It's not your typical open-world game like GTA or Red Dead Redemption as it lets gamers go anywhere after the plot has showed them the way.

Can Kratos explore and revisit all Nine Realms?

God of War Ragnarok has all nine Nordic kingdoms, including Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and Asgard, which God of War (2018) lacked. Furthermore, some of the lands from 2018's God of War have been expanded. In GoW Ragnarok, locations can be split between semi-open sections with several branching paths and linear areas with little room to explore. That all changes, however, after gamers complete the primary storyline campaign.

That includes 17 key tasks called The Path but once completed, a final 18th chapter, Beyond Ragnarok, will unlock. This gives Kratos and his allies the opportunity to explore the Nine Realms and fill up any holes he may have missed previously. He can also reach previously inaccessible map fragments, get valuable items, unlock trophies, and locate collectibles.
