Rainbow Six Siege X, also popularly known as R6, is a free-to-play team-based tactical shooter video game. It is an updated version of Rainbow Six Siege with massive improvements to both the graphical and audio aspects of the game. The development of Siege X was spearheaded by Ubisoft Montreal, who were also the creative minds that gave us Rainbow Six Siege a decade ago. The game was released on June 10, 2025, for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/X/S, and Microsoft Windows PCs, however the previous version, Rainbow Six Siege, came out on December 1, 2015.
The game is a part of the Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six franchise and is an online reboot of the first Rainbow Six game that came out back in 1998. Siege X takes up where the previous version left off at the end of Year 10 Season 1, Operation Prep Phase. The first season of Siege X is titled Operation Daybreak and is marked as Year 10 Season 2 when taking the previous version and its seasonal calender into account.
The game features two primary game modes: Core Siege and Dual Front. Siege X introduces the latter, with new features like 6v6 game play, a singular new and evolving map District which boasts a massive scale. This game mode also dissolves the differences between attackers and defenders in R6 as it allows players to create a lineup that consists of both categories. The Core Siege game mode is a 5v5 format with Ranked, Unranked and Siege Cup consisting of Bomb Defusal primary objective while Quick Play includes Secure Area and Hostage Rescue as well. Siege Cup is a highly competitive game mode that follows Pro League settings and format. It offers the highest level of competitive matchmaking and requires signing up a roster of 5 players. The Ranked game mode on the other hand can be played with any number of party members and rewards rank points with each ranked division offering lucrative rewards.
