Hideki Matsuyama, the first Japanese professional golfer to win at the Masters Tournament, competes on the PGA Tour as of April 2025. At the 2021 Masters, he defeated Will Zalatoris by a single shot, scoring 278, under 10. He went to Tohoku Fukushi University in Sendai, Miyagi Province, in Japan. He won five amateur championships, including the Asian Amateur Championship in 2010. He was also the first Japanese amateur to play at the 2011 Masters Tournament; furthermore, he won a silver cup as the lowest-scoring amateur. In 2012, he became the number one player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

Matsuyama turned professional in 2013, and in his rookie season, he won the Tsuruya Open, defeating David Oh by a single stroke with a score of 266, under 18. As of April 2025, he has 20 professional victories and five Presidents Cup participations. He has won eight times on the Japan Golf Tour, twice in the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and twice in World Golf Championships events. He is now the most successful Japanese player in PGA Tour history, with 11 victories. His most recent win was at the 2025 Sentry, defeating Collin Morikawa by three strokes.

It was revealed in July 2017, after the birth of his daughter Kanna, that he got married in January 2017 to Mei. Matsuyama claimed that since no one had bothered to inquire about his marital status, he felt no need to disclose her to the public.

“No one really asked me if I was married, so I didn’t have to answer that question,” Matsuyama stated.
