The Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational is an LPGA Tour event, that was renamed the Dow Championship in early 2024. The event is hosted in Michigan and is a team event, similar to the format of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, featuring better ball (fourballs) for the second and fourth rounds and alternate shots (foursomes) for the first and third.
The Dow Chemical Company is the event's sponsor. It was founded in 2019. The tournament's total purse was $2 million when it first started, but it increased to $2.3 million and $2.5 million in the following years before climbing to $2.7 million in 2023 and $3 million in 2024.
The event was awarded LPGA Tournament of the Year in 2019, which was the first time an inaugural tournament had received this honor. Furthermore, as the Midland Country Club hosts the 2022 tournament, organizers of the event announce a five-year renewal of their association with the Dow, which will last through 2029.
Who won the Dow Championship in 2024?
The 2024 Dow Championship was won by Atthaya Thitikul and Yin Ruoning with a score of 258, under 22 by a stroke. They earned a winner's share of $366,082 each of the $3 million purse.
The Olympic pair got off to a fast start in the final round, sharing the lead after three consecutive birdies on holes two, three, and four. They added two more on holes seven and nine to gain some momentum going into the back nine.
However, that momentum slowed down when Ally Ewing and Jennifer Kupcho shot three birdies to top the leaderboard. As the play came to an end, they were finally trading blows with Yin and Thitikul.
In contrast to Yin and Thitikul's pars at Nos. 14 and 15, Kupcho and Ewing had back-to-back birdies to maintain the pace. Approaching the crucial par-3 18th hole, both teams had made two pars on Nos. 16 and 17.
To win the championship, Thitikul made a decisive putt to take a one-stroke lead over Kupcho and Ewing, who finished runners-up. In the four-ball round, Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Nicole Broch Estrup, a Danish duo, went bogey-free with seven birdies and tied for third place.
