Minecraft Enchantments

Enchantments
Source: Youtube

Enchanting is a gameplay mechanic that enhances the functionality of various items such as armor, tools, weapons, and books by incorporating one or more distinct "enchantments." These enchantments serve to amplify the item's existing capabilities or bestow upon them supplementary abilities and functionalities. When an item is enchanted, it becomes visually noticeable through a captivating and unique "glint" animation that adorns the item.

Enchanting Equipment

Enchanting Table

This item is utilized for the purpose of enchanting various items. By interacting with the enchanting table, players can imbue their equipment with enchantments, enhancing their abilities and granting them additional functionalities.

Bookshelf

The presence of bookshelves in the vicinity of the enchanting table plays a significant role in the enchanting process. Each bookshelf, up to a maximum of 15, augments the enchantments offered by the enchanting table, allowing for more potent and desirable enchantments to be applied to items.

Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli serves as a vital component in the enchanting process. It is required to power the enchanting table, enabling it to function and carry out the enchantments. By providing Lapis Lazuli, players can harness the mystical energies necessary for the enchanting process.

Anvil

The anvil is a versatile tool used in enchanting. It serves multiple purposes, including combining enchanted items such as tools, armor, and weapons. Additionally, it allows players to add enchantments from enchanted books to their items. Furthermore, the anvil facilitates the repair of enchanted items while preserving their enchantments, ensuring their longevity and effectiveness.

Grindstone

The grindstone offers a unique function within the enchanting system. It enables players to remove all non-curse enchantments from an item, thereby resetting its enchantment status. In exchange, players receive a modest amount of experience. Moreover, the grindstone can optionally repair an item without consuming any experience, restoring its durability and functionality.

Enchanted Book

An enchanted book is a valuable item that contains specific enchantments. These books can be combined with other items using an anvil, allowing the enchantments contained within the book to be transferred to the item. This grants the item additional enchantments, bolstering its capabilities and providing unique benefits.

Enchanting Methods

Enchanting in Minecraft Survival mode offers several avenues to imbue items with powerful enchantments. Here are the different methods available:

Enchanting Table

The primary method involves utilizing an enchanting table surrounded by bookshelves. By spending experience points and consuming lapis lazuli, players can enchant unenchanted items. The enchantments offered are randomized, providing a range of enhancements for the chosen item.

Anvil and Enchanted Books

Enchanted books can be combined with items using an anvil. By placing an enchanted book and the desired item in the anvil, players can transfer the enchantment from the book onto the item. This allows for specific enchantments to be applied, providing targeted enhancements.

Anvil and Combined Items

Through the use of an anvil, players can merge two identical items that possess different existing enchantments. The resulting item will retain the enchantments from both original items, creating a single item with a combination of enchantments. This method allows for the customization and optimization of enchanted items.

Librarian Villager

Interacting with a librarian villager presents an alternative way to acquire enchantments. Instead of using lapis lazuli and experience, players can trade emeralds with the librarian villager in exchange for enchanted books. This offers a different resource pathway to obtain enchantments.

In addition to these methods, there are other means of obtaining already enchanted items:

  • Villagers: Trading with villagers can yield enchanted items in exchange for emeralds.

  • Fishing: While fishing, there is a chance of obtaining enchanted items as rewards.

  • Mob Drops: Certain hostile mobs, such as zombies, skeletons, and piglins, have a chance of dropping enchanted items when defeated by a player.

  • Treasure Chests: Exploring various structures and locations, including end cities, shipwrecks, and strongholds, may lead to discovering enchanted items within treasure chests.

  • Bartering with Piglins: By offering gold, piglins may give enchanted books or iron boots with the Soul Speed enchantment.

  • Raids: In the Bedrock Edition, killing pillagers and vindicators during raids can result in acquiring enchanted items.

For server operators and players in single-player worlds with cheats enabled, enchanting items using commands like "/enchant" is possible. Additionally, in Creative mode, enchanting can be done via an anvil and enchanted books without requiring experience points. Enchanted books are readily available in the Creative mode inventory, allowing for easy access to different enchantments and levels.

Enchanting Table

An enchanting table is a key tool used in the enchanting process, allowing players to imbue items with magical enchantments. To enchant an item, the player needs to place it in the input slots of the enchanting table GUI and add 1 to 3 Lapis Lazuli in the dedicated slot. Once the item is placed, three randomized enchantment options appear on the right side of the GUI.

The glyphs shown in the enchanting table GUI do not affect the actual enchantment outcome. However, hovering over an enchantment reveals the specific enchantment that will be applied to the item. On mobile devices, players can tap an enchantment before adding Lapis Lazuli or hold the enchantment before releasing it.

The available enchantments are limited by the player's current experience level. Only enchantments with a level requirement equal to or below the player's level will be displayed. The number of Lapis Lazuli placed in the table determines the Lapis Lazuli requirement for the enchantment. The enchantment options presented are randomly generated, and the actual level cost and Lapis Lazuli requirement do not affect the outcome.

While the player must meet the level required to obtain an enchantment, the number of levels consumed is equal to the Lapis Lazuli requirement. For example, if the third enchantment displayed requires a level 30 enchantment, the player must have at least 30 levels but will only consume 3 levels and 3 Lapis Lazuli.

The level requirement influences the quantity, type, and level of enchantments bestowed upon the item. Generally, a higher experience level results in more and/or higher-level enchantments. However, there is a significant random factor involved. Even with a level 30 enchantment, there is no guarantee of obtaining multiple enchantments or achieving "maximum strength" enchantments. For instance, a level 30 enchantment can yield only Fortune II or Efficiency III. Conversely, it is possible to receive multiple different enchantments from a single use of the enchanting table. For example, applying a level 30 enchantment to a pickaxe may grant both Efficiency IV and Unbreaking III.

To increase the enchantment level options, bookshelves can be placed near the enchanting table, leaving one block of air between them. Placing a total of 15 bookshelves around the enchanting table unlocks level 30 enchantments. The Enchantment Mechanics page provides more detailed information on this mechanic.

Enchanting a book using the enchanting table results in an enchanted book. This enchanted book does not provide any immediate effects but can be used later to transfer the enchantment to another item using an anvil.

Even when in Creative mode, using the enchanting table still consumes experience points. If the player does not have enough experience, the experience level reduces to zero, but the enchantment can still be applied.

Affecting Offered Enchantments

When enchanting an item at any enchantment level, the player's enchantment seed is altered. This seed determines the possible enchantments for all items at every enchantment level. If none of the available enchantments for a tool are desired, the player can spend 1 Lapis Lazuli and 1 level to enchant a book or a different tool, effectively refreshing the list of enchantment options.

The potential enchantments that can be obtained depend on several factors, including the player's enchantment seed, the type and material of the item being enchanted, and the enchantment level ranging from 1 to 30. Certain actions do not impact the possible enchantments:

  • Removing the item from the enchanting table and placing it back in.

  • Clicking on the item slot with a different item.

  • Using a different item of the same type and material.

  • Replacing or moving the enchanting table (as long as the same number of bookshelves is maintained).

  • Using a different enchanting table with the same number of bookshelves.

  • Replacing or rearranging the bookshelves without changing their total number.

Changing the enchantments offered by adding, removing, or blocking bookshelves will alter the enchantments displayed, but it does not affect the pool of possible enchantments. If another enchanting table with the same number of bookshelves is used, the same enchantments will still be shown as before. It's worth noting that the enchantments for a specific enchantment level (with the same seed and item) can differ based on which row they appear in the enchanting table GUI. However, the enchantments are not inherently "better" or "worse" based on the row, despite the different resource costs associated with them.

Anvil Combinations

An anvil provides the means to combine the enchantments of two items, sacrificing one of them while repairing the other. To be compatible for combining, the items must either be of the same type and material (such as two iron swords) or consist of one item and one enchanted book with an applicable enchantment (such as a bow and an enchanted book with the Infinity enchantment).

When two enchanted items, two enchanted books, or one of each with the same enchantment at the same level are combined, it results in an item or book with the next higher level of that enchantment, up to the maximum allowed in survival mode. For example, combining a book with Thorns I and Unbreaking II with another book that has Unbreaking II will produce a book with Thorns I and Unbreaking III.

youtube-cover

To perform the combination, the player places the item they want to enchant in the first slot of the anvil and the sacrificial item in the second slot. If the combination is valid, the resulting enchanted item will appear in the anvil's output slot, and an experience level cost, labeled "Enchantment Cost," will be displayed below it. The text will be green if the player has enough experience levels, or red if they don't. To complete the enchanting process, the player simply removes the enchanted item from the output slot and their experience level is reduced accordingly.

The experience cost depends on the enchantments present on the items. Highly enchanted items will have a higher cost. If the target item is also in need of repair, the cost will be further increased. Additionally, the player has the option to rename the target item for an additional cost. It's important to note that there is an accumulating surcharge for previous work done on anvils. In Survival mode, any work that costs more than 39 levels of experience will be rejected. However, it may still be possible to achieve the same result by performing the work in multiple steps. For example, a damaged enchanted bow can be repaired on an anvil using a regular bow, and then another enchanted bow can be used to combine enchantments with the repaired bow.

Enchantment Books

Enchanted books are created by enchanting a regular book using an enchanting table at the cost of experience points. They can also be found in chests of various structures, purchased from librarian villagers in exchange for emeralds, or obtained while fishing.

Enchanted books can be applied to tools, weapons, and armor, or combined with other enchanted books using an anvil. This allows for the application of enchantments that cannot be obtained directly through the enchanting table. For example, it is possible to apply the Thorns enchantment to boots using an enchanted book.

youtube-cover

Enchanted books can have multiple enchantments of any type. However, when combined with an item in an anvil, only enchantments appropriate for that item type will be applied. For instance, if an enchanted book has both the Respiration and Power enchantments, the Respiration enchantment will be lost if the book is applied to anything other than a helmet. Similarly, the Power enchantment will be lost if the book is applied to anything other than a bow.

In Creative mode, enchanted books can be used to apply any enchantment to any item. For example, it is possible to give a stick to the Knockback II enchantment. However, mutually-exclusive enchantments such as Infinity and Mending cannot be applied this way or even via the /enchant command, although both enchantments will function as normal when obtained on a bow through the /give command.

The experience cost for using enchanted books is generally lower than combining items with similar enchantments, as the books themselves already cost experience to create. However, it is still an additional cost, and enchanting items directly has the advantage of a chance to receive multiple enchantments. The benefit of enchanted books is that they can be stockpiled and applied to an item of choice, allowing for controlled combinations. For example, a Silk Touch book can be used on an axe, pickaxe, or shovel, and the player can decide which item receives which enchantment.

Disenchanting

To remove enchantments from items, there are two primary methods available: utilizing the grindstone or repairing the items through the crafting grid. When employing the grindstone, all enchantments (excluding Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing) are eliminated, while a corresponding amount of experience is regained. The experience gained is dependent on the level and value of the enchantment(s) attached to the item.

Enchantment Items

Enchantments with multiple levels are displayed with their maximum level numbers. Using commands, mutually exclusive enchantments can be combined: (e.g., /give @s bow{Enchantments:[{id:infinity,lvl:1},{id:mending,lvl:1}]} 1).

Additionally, players have the ability to surpass the maximum levels of enchantments: (e.g., /give @s netherite_sword{Enchantments:[{id:fire_aspect,lvl:10}]} 1). However, if the level exceeds 10, the representation changes.

Enchantment Summary

Please note that the following enchantments are obtainable in Survival mode within the game, allowing players to acquire them legitimately. However, it's important to mention that alternative combinations of enchantments can be achieved in creative mode or through the use of cheats, mods, or third-party software.

Max Level

The maximum level of enchantments can vary, but the game can handle values up to a 32-bit integer range (from -2^31 to 2^31-1). Exceeding this limit results in an overflow, eventually resetting the value to 0.

Primary Items

These are the items that can be legitimately enchanted using an enchanting table in Survival mode. Enchantments can be applied to items of any material, though the ease of enchantment may differ (see Enchantment mechanics for more information).

Secondary Items

In Survival mode, these are the items that cannot receive the enchantment directly from an enchanting table. However, they can obtain the enchantment by using an enchanted book and an anvil.

Weight: This indicates the relative probability of encountering the enchantment as an option.
