Russell Wilson pays tribute to Carmelo Anthony as NBA star announces retirement 

NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony officially called time on his career on Monday, May 22.

Anthony spent 19 years in the NBA, finishing his career with 28,289 points. As things stand, he's ninth on the league's all-time scoring list.

Melo's announcement caught the attention of Denver Broncos star Russell Wilson. The quarterback tweeted his congratulations for the former Denver Nuggets star.

"Congrats Carmelo Anthony. One of the greatest scorers of all time," Wilson wrote.

Unlike Russell Wilson, Melo failed to end his career with a championship ring. The closest he came was playing in the Conference finals for Denver. The Nuggets lost that series to the eventual champions, the Los Angeles Lakers back in 2009.

Carmelo Anthony was also voted as one of the 75 greatest players in NBA history. He ended his career with 10 All-Star selections and made it to six All-NBA teams in 19 years in the league.

In the twilight of his career, Melo eventually signed with the Lakers for a year, though that season ended without any postseason success.

Things did not look too bright for the Broncos in 2022. They ended the season dead last in the AFC West and were among the NFL's lowest-scoring teams.

That form soon saw the Broncos part ways with Nathaniel Hackett, with former Saints head coach Sean Payton taking over in the offseason.

The Broncos' schedule for 2023 isn't the easiest either.

Denver begins the season at home to the Las Vegas Raiders, who faced problems of their own last year but still managed to finish with a better record than the Broncos. They then face the Washington Commanders at home before embarking on a tough stretch.

The Dolphins, Jets, Chiefs and Packers could prove to be tricky meetings for the Broncos. The Jets, of course, will be eager to hit the ground running with Aaron Rodgers running the show, while the Chiefs look as resilient as ever after winning the Super Bowl.

The second half of the season could prove to be equally tricky for Russell Wilson and co, though the schedule does ease up towards the end. Games against the Browns and a rebuilding Texans should provide some momentum.
