The Super Bowl is little more than a week away and as the big game draws near, so too does a chance to set new records in the game. One such record that could fall this year is for most rushing yards in a Super Bowl.
With both Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts well under 30, rushing is a weapon that could prove pivotal on both sides.
Unlike many records that have been felled by Tom Brady, rushing yards is a category that goes back decades. That said, where does the record stand and what names hover around it? Here's a look at the top five quarterbacks with the most rushing yards in the big game:
#5 - Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers - Super Bowl 50
Cam Newton's flame burned brightly in 2015, but ran out of juice almost as fast. The Carolina Panthers rocketed to a 15-1 record and ran through the playoffs, facing Denver in Super Bowl 50.
Peyton Manning threw his final touchdown in the victory, but the opposing quarterback got within striking distance of setting the rushing yardage record.
Newton finished the day with 45 yards on the ground from six attempts. The game was a losing effort, but Newton still made his way into the annals.
#4 - Steve Young, San Francisco 49ers - Super Bowl 29
By the end of the 1994 season, Steve Young had put together the best throwing season of his career. He threw for 35 touchdowns and ten interceptions while completing more than 70 percent of his passes. However, his legs achieved greatness in the big game that season.
Young rushed five times for 49 yards against the San Diego Chargers. The quarterback's rushing attack proved to be one of the nails in the coffin for the Chargers, as the San Francisco 49ers won the Lombardi Trophy.
#3 - Joe Montana, San Francisco 49ers - Super Bowl 19
Before Young, another 49ers quarterback had rushed to greatness in the 1980's. in the 1984 season, Joe Montana threw for 28 touchdowns and ten interceptions en route to a final showdown against the Miami Dolphins. The 49ers won the game and partly had Montana's legs to thank.
At the end of a well-remembered 14-1 campaign, the quarterback's legs showed no weariness as he rushed five times for 59 yards and one touchdown. Montana is accepted by many to be one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, and his presence on this list shouldn't come as a surprise.
#2 - Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers - Super Bowl 47
Interestingly, another 49ers QB makes the list. After a red-hot 2012 campaign that didn't start until partway through the season, Kaepernick navigated the NFC playoffs and reached the big game.
Once there, Kaepernick posted a statline that most would agree is better than the quarterback ahead of him on this list. However, he fell short by two yards. On seven carries, Kaepernick rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown en route to losing to the Baltimore Ravens on the sport's biggest stage.
#1 - Steve McNair, Tennessee Titans - Super Bowl 34
At the end of the 1999 season, Titans quarterback Steve McNair faced the St. Louis Rams needing just one win to secure a Lombardi Trophy. While McNair and company ultimately came just one yard short of winning the game, the QB recorded the most rushing yards in a Super Bowl.
McNair's 64 yards is the record, but will Patrick Mahomes or Jalen Hurts surpass him in this year's big game?
