Jacob Oram Biography
Jacob D P Oram is a New Zealand all-round cricketer, born on July 28, 1978 in Palmerston North, New Zealand. He is a left- handed batsman and a right arm medium fast bowler.
Known more for his determination despite injuries than his records, Jacob is one such cricketer who has set records and achieved respect as a cricketer and it wouldn't be wrong to say that, credit be given to his height which gave him an edge over others as a bowler.
Background
Not known to many is the fact that cricket wasn't his ever- obvious choice as a career, he was a soccer goalkeeper when he was young and it was later in 1997 when he made his cricket debut at the domestic level with Central Districts.
Debut
Jacob featured in New Zealand U-19 side and contributed well for the team. He made his international Test debut against India at Wellington on December 12, 2002 and took 11 wickets in the test series.
Due to his foot problems, Oram had to miss the tour of Australia in the summer of 2001-2002.
However, he came back in 2002-03 and secured his place in ODIs and Test.
Rise to glory
His performance escalated in 2004 when he scored 273 runs at an amazing average of 91 in a three test series against South Africa. It was in the same series that he hit his maiden Test century at Hamilton.
Low points
Due to his injuries, he had to give up on many crucial matches, he missed out on the Australian tour in 2005 due to a back injury. Before the 2007 World Cup, Jacob had hurt his finger during fielding in a bilateral series against Australia which made his participation in the World Cup questionable.
Nevertheless, he still played at an average of 33 with bat and 25 with the ball and New Zealand eventually made it till the semifinals.
Club career
From 2008-2010, he was an active member of the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. In 2011, he was signed by Rajasthan Royals.
In 2012, he played for the inaugural Sri Lanka Premier League for Uva Next, which turned out to be the winner eventually.
He participated in IPL in 2013 and played for Mumbai Indians.
Records
In 2011, he made the fastest ever partnership of more than 50 in ODI, when the pair, Jacob Oram and Ross Taylor made 85 runs off just 22 balls with Jacob contributing majorly, which is, 25 off nine balls.
Proving his talent in thee bowling section too, Oram picked up a hit-trick in his first T20 international against Sri Lanka in September 2009.
He scored a century in 71 balls against Australia in the Commonwealth Bank Series in January 2007, which was an achievement as it was the then fastest ton by a New Zealander in ODI cricket.
Retirement
Jacob retired from Test cricket in 2009 due to his recurring injuries with his last match against Sri Lanka in August 2009 in Colombo.
The 40 year aged is now mentoring a coming New Zealand player, Adam Milne. He also works with Massey University in providing and organizing a cricket program called, Leading Edge. This program provides with an opportunity to train and play cricket and study sports-related subjects that Massey offers for 16-18 year olds and those above 18.
