The UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib "The Eagle" Nurmagomedov is one of the more controversial
fighters in the world but is recognized for his exceptional ability inside the Octagon. As of
writing this, he is yet to be defeated inside the Octagon.
Khabib Nurmagomedov was born in the village of Sildi in Tsumadinsky District of the Dagestan ASSR, which is an autonomous republic inside Russia. His father was a veteran of the army and had wrestled from an early age as well as training in other martial art forms earlier. Khabib trained under his father and started wrestling from the age of 8. He was attracted to Mixed Martial Arts when he saw others training in it inside the gym. Khabib trained in wrestling, judo, and combat sambo in his youth. He would get into street fights for a while but then focused completely on Mixed Martial Arts. Khabib made his MMA debut in 2008 and would fight a long time in Pro FC and M1, before finally making his debut in the UFC in 2012.
Khabib came into the UFC with a record of 16-0 and then went on to build on that. Inside the Octagon, he was practically undefeatable. He beat some of the best UFC fighters in the world, including Pat Healy, Rafael Dos Anjos and Edson Barboza.
With his record standing at 25-0 he faced Al Iaquinta and defeated him for the UFC Lightweight Championship. After becoming the UFC Lightweight Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov became entangled in a huge feud with Conor McGregor. With extremely bad blood between the two, there were plenty of incidents between Khabib and Conor McGregor in the lead up to the fight.
The lead-up to the pay-per-view event of UFC 229 saw a huge amount of trash-talking take place between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov. When the pay-per-view finally rolled around, Conor McGregor entered the Octagon with Khabib Nurmagomedov. In a 4 round fight, McGregor was dominated by Khabib. The two put on a show, but in the end, Conor McGregor had to tap out of the fight ending it early in the fourth round. Post-fight, he jumped into the crowd attacking McGregorâs corner-men. His action sparked a brawl among the crowd between McGregor and Khabib fans.
At UFC 242, Khabib Nurmagomedov made his return to the Octagon for the first time since UFC 229, as he faced interim UFC Lightweight Champion, Dustin Poirier in a title unification bout. Nurmagomedov eventually defeated Poirier via third round submission, after having dominated the first two rounds of the fight. With the win, Nurmagomedov extended his winning streak to 28-0 and unified the UFC Lightweight Championship, as well.
