Set in the 1920s, during the Prohibition Era in the United States, Boardwalk Empire follows Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a man who rises to power. On paper, he's the Atlantic City town treasurer. However, behind the scenes, he is a bootlegger with ties to mob bosses and an affinity for parties, grandeur, and lawless chaos.

The series is based on the historical Enoch L. Johnson and a book by Nelson Johnson. This period crime drama delves into the gritty world of an influential political figure with grandiose dreams that extend far beyond the legalities of his era. The soundtrack of the show perfectly matches the mysterious, fast-paced, and intense vibe it brings to the table.

The opening track, Straight Up and Down, by The Brian Jonestown Massacre band, sets the scene with its intriguing combination of strings and bass. True to the show's premise and era, the soundtrack features music from the 1890s to the 1920s, including artists such as Kathy Brier and Leon Redbone. It won the Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media at the 54th Grammy Awards.
