In just his second season, Herb Jones has put himself in the conversation of NBA's top perimeter defenders. The New Orleans Pelicans drafted him in the second round of the 2021 draft, and he is proving to be a key piece of the team's future.
The 24-year-old is averaging 10.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.9 blocks per game this season. Besides his on-court exploits, Jones has caught attention for his lifestyle away from basketball.
With today's generation of NBA players regularly signing record contracts, they've built a reputation of occasionally getting crazy with their money. However, that is not the case for Jones.
Since entering the league last year, Herb Jones has managed to keep a modest state of mind. He still drives the same car he did in college, and is always spotted in New Orleans Pelicans gear that players get for free.
During a recent interview with Marc Spears, Jones opened up on why he limits his spending so much. For him, it's all about making sure his family is set up for the future.
“As soon as we get to the locker room, we change our clothes and [I] put on our basketball stuff anyway. I just try to walk in supercomfortable. I try to save, man. I’m not worried about what somebody would say about my appearance if my family is doing good or better than what they were.
“I think long term for my kids. If I have to wear Pelicans gear or whatever team gear for the team I’m on for the rest of my career, then my kids or kids’ kids can go to school for free just based on what I earned in the NBA. Then I’m good. I’m cool.”
Herb Jones has the right frame of mind
In a time period where players are making more money than ever, Herb Jones should be applauded for his state of mind. At the end of the day, all he cares about is taking care of his family and basketball.
We have seen many stories of pro athletes being careless with their finances. Jones is doing everything he can to make sure he never becomes one of them.
Part of this thought process could stem from the fact that Herbert Jones was a second-round pick and doesn't know how long he'll be around. However, he shouldn't worry about not getting a second contract. With his defensive prowess, he's become an ideal complementary piece for the New Orleans Pelicans as they attempt to build a contending team around Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum.
