Is Zion Williamson playing tonight against Spurs? Latest injury update on Pelicans' star ahead of matchup (21st March 2023)

Is Zion Williamson playing tonight?

Zion Williamson has been out of action since January, and it looks like it is going to remain that way. Per the latest injury report, the New Orleans Pelicans star is out Tuesday night against the San Antonio Spurs.

While Zion Williamson has proven he can be a dominant player, he's struggled to be a nightly fixture in the lineup. Now in his fourth NBA season, the former No. 1 pick has only played a total of 114 games. After missing all of last year with a foot injury, Williamson has played in less than 30 games so far in 2023.

In the 29 appearances he has made this year, Williamson is averaging 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.6 assists. This production landed him an All-Star nomination, but he was unable to play due to injury.

The New Orleans Pelicans were a top team in the Western Conference with a healthy Williamson, but have since dropped in the standings. They are currently in 12th place with a record of 34-37. That said, they are only one game behind the Utah Jazz for the final spot in the play-in tournament.

Is Zion Williamson expected to play again this season?

Despite missing the last 34 games for the New Orleans Pelicans, there is a chance Zion Williamson will play again this year. Earlier this month, the team announced he would be re-evaluated again in two weeks.

Along with this update, Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that Williamson could play again this year and be available for the playoffs if they were to get in.

"While the Pelicans announced on Wednesday that he would be re-examined in two weeks, a source with knowledge of the situation said the team is still expecting him to be ready before the end of the regular season. When it comes to injury recovery, there is perhaps no more unpredictable player in today’s NBA than Williamson. Nonetheless, significant hope remains that he’ll be healthy in time to be a late game-changer."

If Williamson is able to return in the final weeks of the regular season, New Orleans might be able to make a playoff push. They are still within striking distance, and getting the All-Star forward back could ignite the team.

Alongside Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum, the Pelicans have the talent to be competitive in the postseason. With a healthy Williamson, they could cause some trouble for teams in a seven-game series.
