Robert Griffin III joins chorus of support as Clippers reward coach Ty Lue with lavish long-term contract

The LA Clippers ended the Lakers' hopes of landing Tyronn Lue. The Clips secured Lue's services for a multiyear deal worth $14 million per season, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Lakers were reportedly interested in the 2016 NBA champion, given LeBron James' close relationship with Lue from their time together in Cleveland.

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III reacted to the news, praising the Clippers' decision to stick around with Lue, who has a way of connecting with players that not many coaches have.

"Keeping him from LeBron. Smart move keeping a great coach who relates to and gets through to his players more than most," the former Washington Commanders signal-caller wrote on Twitter.

The Lakers now have to redirect their attention to different candidates. After they fired Darvin Ham following their playoffs elimination, the Lakers were linked with a series of candidates to take over this offseason.

Sam Cassell, James Borrego, Kenny Atkinson and Tyronn Lue, among others, were named potential candidates to replace Ham in Crypto.com Arena, but it seems like one inexperienced prospect could take the lead in this race.

JJ Redick reportedly close to becoming new Lakers HC after Tyronn Lue extension

According to Lakers insider Anthony Irwin, the front office has 'zeroed' on JJ Redick as their most fitting candidate after Tyronn Lue was extended as the Clippers' coach. Redick has a close relationship with LeBron James, which could play in his favor during the selection process.

“It is just a matter of when, not if, that this gets announced,” Irwin said.

Redick retired from the NBA in 2021 and even though he's been linked with comeback rumors, his path may be on the bench this time. He was initially considered a candidate to join the Charlotte Hornets and now the Lakers reportedly have him on their radar. With Tyronn Lue out of the picture, Redick's case is getting stronger.

Carmelo Anthony shows support to JJ Redick as new Lakers HC

Former NBA and Lakers player Carmelo Anthony shared his thoughts on this potential link-up, comparing JJ Redick to Steve Kerr's path with the Golden State Warriors:

“In this particular situation, JJ has been away from the game. So he’s able to gather this information a study the game and watch the game and talk to coaches and talk to GMs and go sit in in these training camps and understand the formulas of everybody. It’s almost the Steve Kerr path… so to me, I f**k with it." (3:49 mark)

Things appear to be falling into place for Redick to become the next Lakers HC.
