NBA referee Tony Brothers was forced to miss a game after allegedly calling Spencer Dinwiddie a "bitch-a** motherfu**er." Brothers and Dinwiddie were involved in a verbal spat in a game on Nov. 4.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Brothers did not receive a suspension without pay from the league. However, he was forced to miss a game for the incident involving Dinwiddie.
In a game between the Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors on Nov. 4, Brothers called a foul on Dinwiddie. The Mavericks guard protested the call, prompting the veteran official to call a technical foul.
In his interview following the Mavericks' win over the Raptors, Spencer Dinwiddie revealed that an official called him a "bitch-a** motherfu**er" to his teammate. Dinwiddie didn't appreciate the insult and later confirmed to The Athletic that he was talking about Tony Brothers.
"Not only would I like my money back, but I would like to not be called a bitch-ass mother f****er to my teammates," Dinwiddie said. "If there's anybody who feels that way about me, not naming any names, they can address me personally, face to face."
Dinwiddie also clarified that he used a cuss word, but never directed it towards the official.
"I understand it's the heat of the moment. I've definitely said swear words. But like if I was playing against somebody on the other team and they said that to my teammate, I would be like listen, 'Hey, listen I'm right here."
In his interview with The Athletic, Dinwiddie also revealed that the NBA reached out to him following his comments. Brothers is a 29-year veteran with 1,626 regular-season games and 174 postseason games under his belt. He's also called 15 games in the NBA Finals, per Yahoo! Sports.
Spencer Dinwiddie ejected in Mavericks' win over defending champs
Spencer Dinwiddie was ejected from Tuesday's game between the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors. Dinwiddie was called for a Flagrant 2 early in the fourth quarter after an inadvertent elbow on Jordan Poole. Officials reviewed the play before ejecting Dinwiddie.
On the way to the locker room, Dinwiddie approached Poole and dapped him up. The 29-year-old guard couldn't help but laugh at the situation because of the verdict. There was no intent on Dinwiddie's part to harm the Warriors star. He exited the game with 14 points and two assists.
Dinwiddie's ejection was not costly for the Mavericks as they managed to pull off a 116-113 win. Luka Doncic had 41 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists, while Tim Hardaway Jr. added 22 points. Klay Thompson had the opportunity to force overtime, but missed the game-tying 3-point shot at the buzzer.
Thompson only had five points, while Steph Curry put up 32 points, five rebounds and five assists. The Mavericks snapped their four-game losing streak, as well as Golden State's three-game winning streak.
