Nate McMillan was recently relieved of his duties as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks after a 29-30 start to the season.
Off the court, Nate McMillan has been married for nearly four decades to Michelle McMillan. The couple tied the knot following his selection in the 1986 NBA Draft. They met in college while attending North Carolina State University, where Nate starred on the basketball team.
Michelle originally hails from North Carolina, as does Nate, and played high school basketball at Hickory High School. She is a former accountant.
Nate and Michelle share two children, Jamelle and Brittany, born in 1988 and 1992, respectively. Jamelle followed in his father's footsteps and played college basketball, spending four seasons as a member of the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Following his 2011 graduation with a degree in business and corporate communications, he served as the director of basketball operations at Drake University. Brittany graduated from Howard University in 2014; however, not much is known about her work history.
Jamelle joined the New Orleans Pelicans coaching staff in the 2013-14 season and spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the franchise. He joined the Phoenix Suns staff for the 2018-19 season before rejoining the Pelicans the following season. Upon his father's promotion to the role of head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, Jamelle joined his staff as an assistant coach.
Nate McMillan's career as a player and coach
Nate McMillan spent 12 seasons as a member of the Seattle SuperSonics after they made him the 30th overall selection of the 1986 NBA draft. McMillan averaged 5.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.9 steals and 0.4 blocks per game while shooting 44.3% from the field, 34.3% from 3-point range and 65.0% from the free-throw line.
McMillan was named to two All-Defensive Teams and led the league in steals in 1993-94, despite averaging just 25.8 minutes per game and starting only eight games. His 3.0 steals per game that season remain the 14th-highest mark in NBA history and the highest of any player who did not start for his team. His No.10 jersey was retired by the SuperSonics during the 1998-99 season.
Following his retirement, Nate McMillan became an assistant coach for the SuperSonics before being promoted to head coach during the 2000-01 season at the age of 36. McMillan stayed with Seattle through the 2004-05 season before becoming the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. He was fired midway through his seventh season and spent the following year away from coaching.
McMillan joined the Indiana Pacers as an associate head coach in the 2013-14 season. He spent three seasons in that role before being promoted to head coach, where he spent four seasons. Despite leading the Pacers to the postseason in four seasons, three of which came after Paul George's departure, and receiving a contract extension two weeks prior, McMillan was fired following Indiana's first-round playoff exit.
Following his departure from Indiana, Nate McMillan joined the Atlanta Hawks staff as an assistant coach. He was promoted to head coach during his first season with the team and led the team to a 27-11 record down the stretch following a 14-20 start. After a surprise trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, McMillan received a new contract. However, he was let go following a 29-30 start to the 2022-23 season. He holds a coaching record of 760-668.
