Brooklyn Nets' new arrival Dorian Finney-Smith came on board at a rather drastic juncture for the Nets this season. However, as rumors would suggest, Brooklyn had quite an interest in keeping Finney-Smith in the future as well.
The Brooklyn Nets have been one of the most controversial franchises to follow in the last few seasons. After a rollercoaster of an offseason, the Nets managed to settle down and go on with their season. But things were far from over.
With drama pertaining to players, coaching staff, and other miscellaneous beings, the Nets were practically monopolizing all airwaves pertaining to basketball. This aspect of their season culminated in one of the most shocking moves in recent history.
With Kyrie Irving's trade leading to a trade for Kevin Durant, the Brooklyn Nets managed to blow their superstar core to enter a rebuild.
As Irving headed to Dallas, the Nets saw Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, and some draft capital return. Meanwhile, Durant's trade to the Phoenix Suns practically shook the landscape of the West.
While Brooklyn's moves were widely criticized, the Nets managed to form a fairly solid roster of some talented young players. With Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, and DFS on board, the Nets have an extremely potent perimeter defense.
Some rumors ahead of the trade deadline suggested that Brooklyn would still make some more trades. With options to flip a lot of their new arrivals, the Nets could certainly make a lot more happen. But they didn't. As per NY Post's Brian Lewis, the Nets had their reasons.
Lewis reported that Brooklyn had passed up on a deal for Finney-Smith. He wrote:
"Brooklyn essentially brought back [Mikal] Bridges, Cam Johnson, Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith for [Kevin] Durant and Irving, along with five first-round picks, another first-round swap and four seconds."
He added:
"Sources told The Post that multiple teams offered two firsts for Finney-Smith, and HoopsHype reported they rejected Memphis’ offer of four firsts for Bridges."
Rejecting two first-round picks for DFS may have been a bit of an extreme move. Considering that Finney-Smith came to Brooklyn before the Durant trade, it is possible that the Nets had every intention of keeping him as he offered support to Durant.
While the Durant trade has certainly depleted Brooklyn's superstar reserves, the Nets have an impressive set of players on their hands. With the potential to build for the future, it will be interesting to follow the Nets' next moves.
The Brooklyn Nets may trade Dorian Finney-Smith next season
Dorian Finney-Smith has proven himself to be a solid 3&D player. However, his contract may present a more pressing issue for the Brooklyn Nets going forward.
Finney-Smith is currently in the first year of a four-year deal. Although his contract value won't put a massive toll on Brooklyn's cap space, the Nets may just need to pair him with assets to facilitate a more solid rebuild.
With Mikal Bridges and Cam Thomas looking like a future star duo for the Nets, Brooklyn may entertain bringing in a third young superstar. Thus, in order to make this trade happen, DFS may be on the trade block in the offseason.
