Yulman Stadium History and Construction Costs

Yulman Stadium at Tulane University has an interesting history and construction story. Before this stadium, Tulane's football games were held at the Superdome, which had a lot of seats but often looked empty due to low attendance.

According to the Tulane Green Wave's official website, it was originally called the "Tulane Community Stadium." But in 2012, it got its official name. Richard Yulman, a former chair/owner of Serta and a Tulane board member, and his wife donated a generous $15 million for its construction. This donation earned them the naming rights. To encourage more people to contribute, Yulman pledged an extra $10 million for the project, but only if it was fully funded by private donations by the end of the first football season in the stadium.

The field inside the stadium was named Benson Field after Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, and his wife, Gayle. They donated $7.5 million from their charitable foundation.

Yulman Stadium opened on September 6, 2014. The first game saw Tulane playing against Georgia Tech in front of 30,000 spectators. Tickets for the opening game sold out in just 14 minutes, with students grabbing around 5,000 of them. This marked the largest student turnout at a Tulane football game since 1975, when football moved off-campus. Construction started on January 28, 2013, costing approximately $75 million. Architects Gould Evans & Associates, Lee Ledbetter & Associates, structural engineer Thornton Tomasetti, and services engineer MCC Group played key roles. Woodward Design+Build was the general contractor responsible for making it all happen.
