To become the player of the tournament in the most prestigious cricket league known as the Indian Premier League is the lifetime dream of every cricket star. The title of the man of the tournament in IPL creates a huge spike in the career report of any cricketer.

11 seasons of IPL have been played so far from 2008 to 2018. Nine different players have won the Man of the Tournament award in IPL with two players winning it twice. So here is a look at the nine cricketers who had won the Man of the Tournament award are:


#1 Shane Watson (Rajasthan Royals, 2008 and 2013)

Indian Premier League received a huge amount of success in its opening season itself which began in the year 2008.

Eight teams competed against each other for one glittering trophy from April to June 2008. Underdogs Rajasthan Royals emerged as the champions of the first season by beating Chennai Super Kings in the final.

The main pillar of the Rajasthan side was Shane Watson who won the man of the tournament award for his spectacular all-around performance throughout the season.

Watson scored 472 runs with the bat along with picking 17 crucial wickets with the ball in that season. His mind-boggling all-around performance helped him clinch his first man of the tournament award of IPL.

He won his second Man of the Tournament award in the year 2013 once again playing for Rajasthan Royals. Watson became the first player to achieve this feat twice in the history of IPL.

Deccan Chargers used to represent Hyderabad in the first five years of IPL. It became defunct in the year 2012 and a new franchise named Sunrisers Hyderabad was formed later. In the second season of IPL, Adam Gilchrist took Deccan Chargers to their first IPL title in the year 2009.

Gilchrist proved to be the main man for their side as he helped his team in all the departments.

Along with opening the innings, he also captained the side and took it to a whole new level with his extraordinary skills. He played the lead role in their win during IPL 2009.

Gilchrist won the Man of the tournament award of the IPL 2009 pertaining to his 495 runs with the bat along with 18 dismissals while donning the gloves.

But Sachin proved why he is considered as the God of Cricket in all formats in the year 2010. The third edition of IPL which took place in the year 2010 was a perfect answer to his critics.

This edition of IPL was the best one in terms of Sachin’s career as he won the two main awards of this tournament. He emerged as the leading run scorer of the season with the total of 618 runs which took Mumbai Indians to the final of 2010 IPL.

Along with this, he also won the Player of the Tournament award for his vital contributions to his side in that season. However, his side could not win the big prize as they lost the final to Chennai Super Kings.

The big hitter from the Caribbean known as Chris Gayle has created many wonders with his strong batting style in the various seasons of IPL.

His ability to score big in any situation is his main strength, and it favours him the most in a T20 game. He won the hearts of the entire world with his ecstatic performance in the IPL 2011.

Popularly known as the “Universe Boss”, Gayle hammered the bowlers over the boundary line during the fourth edition of IPL while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He ended the season with 608 runs and won the two major awards of that season.

Gayle won the Man of the Tournament award and the Orange cap award for his brilliant performance in that season. Gayle also picked eight wickets with the ball as well.

Kolkata Knight Riders have always had many Caribbean players in their side and on many occasions they have proved to be the game-changers for the two-time IPL champions. Some of the best examples are Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. Sunil Narine has been the main player from the KKR side since the franchise bought him.

Narine holds the credit of KKR’s success in IPL as he has contributed in the best manner to all the departments of the team.

He started his IPL career as a mystery spin bowler but now he has also mastered his batting skills and has become a good all-rounder.

Narine has opened the KKR innings many times and has provided the team a blistering start with his massive shots over the boundary line.

Narine has so far won two Man of the Tournament awards in IPL, first in the year 2012 and the second one in 2018. He bagged 17 wickets along with scoring 357 runs in the year 2018.

Kings XI Punjab has been an unlucky team in the history of IPL as (along with Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore), they are yet to lift the IPL trophy.

Despite having big names in their side, the Mohali-based franchise has not been crowned as champions of IPL even once.

Aussie all-rounder Glenn Maxwell tried his best to take his team over the line in 2014 but failed to do so as he lacked support from the other end.

Individually, Maxwell proved to be the best player during the IPL 2014 as he won the Man of the Tournament award that year.

He also contributed to the team with his off-spin bowling which played the role of partnership breaker at some instances. However, Kings XI Punjab had lost that year's final to Kolkata Knight Riders.

Kolkata has so far won the IPL trophy twice. The main reason behind it has been the presence of highly qualified all-rounders in their side. Andre Russell is one such top all-rounder of the KKR franchise who has stunned the entire world with his skills.

Russell had a superb IPL season in the year 2015 as he proved that year why he is the best all-rounder in the world. Russell ended the 2015 season as the best player of the tournament from all the eight teams.

Russell won the man of the tournament award in that season for his multiple match-winning performances. However, Kolkata Knight Riders did not reach that year‘s playoffs as they had to settle with a fifth position finish in the points table.

Virat Kohli has never gone under the hammer so far in the history of IPL as he was picked from the U-19 draft in the year 2008.

Kohli has been the main man for the RCB side and has created some magical performances in IPL history. He is the only player who has scored over 900 runs in a single season of IPL which proves why he is arguably the best cricketer in the world.

Virat Kohli won two main awards during the 2016 IPL season for being the leading run scorer of the tournament with a tally of nearly 1,000 runs. He won the Orange cap award along with Man of the Tournament award in that season.

Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions were the franchises which replaced Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings for two years from 2016 to 2017.

While Gujarat reached the playoffs of IPL 2016, Pune had a fantastic season of IPL in the year 2017 as they ended up as the Runners-Up.

Ben Stokes, the English all-rounder grabbed the attention of the fans before this season of IPL after the franchise bought him for a whopping amount of money in the auction.

However, Stokes made justice to the money invested in him by the franchise as he emerged as the player of the season in 2017.
