The Chennai Super Kings has been an integral part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) since the latter's inception in 2008. Over the years, the team, previously led by MS Dhoni, has established itself as one of the dominant forces in the history of this coveted tournament. The Super Kings have reigned supreme five times in the history of the Indian Premier League, making them the joint-most successful team in the league's 18-year saga. They emerged champions in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023 respectively.

The Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited, a subsidiary of India Cements, owns the five-time IPL champions. KS Viswanathan is the Director and the Chief Operating Officer of the public limited company. Former BCCI President N Srinivasan is the Managing Director of India Cements.

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) announced a franchise-based T20 domestic league in India in September 2007. In 2008, the Chennai-based franchise was bought by the N Srinivasan-owned India Cements, an Indian cement manufacturing company for $91 million.

Srinivasan was the treasurer and the vice-chairman of the BCCI at the time, making his ownership of the Chennai Super Kings a direct conflict of interest. According to the BCCI regulations, no board member could have a commercial interest in matches conducted by the board. When former BCCI President A.C. Muthiah apprised the then president Shashank Manohar, the clause was subsequently amended, excluding the IPL from it.

A PIL was subsequently filed against the amendment in the Supreme Court, and the apex court agreed with the petition that it was a clear case of conflict of interest, paving the way for Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited to be formed. All the rights of the franchise, both administrative and managerial, were handed over to them to avoid further complications. As of March 2025, the India Cements Shareholders Trust owns 30% shares, Saradha Logistics own 6.9% shares and Life Insurance Corporation of India own 6% of the shares in the franchise.
